Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser at The V&A

June 27 2020 - January 10 2021

Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser
Alice at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, Illustration for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by John Tenniel, 1865 (c) Victoria and Albert Museum, London

Set to be the V&A’s most highly anticipated and must-see exhibition of 2020, enter into the fantastical world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and explore the iconic story’s influential 158-year-old history; its origins, evolution and impact on film, fashion, photography, and more…

What’s On at The V&A

Expect an array of fascinating and whimsical exhibition highlights, from stage costumes and Iris van Herpen designs to Annie Leibovitz and Tim Walker photography. Visitors will also catch sight of Lewis Carroll’s original manuscript and fantastic illustrations from John Tenniel, Ralph Steadman and Disney. A wholly eccentric exhibition, the V&A will be the first museum ever to delve headfirst into the evolution of Alice and her long-established cultural influence.

Take a trip ‘down the rabbit hole’ in this immersive retrospective, designed by British theatre designer Tom Piper (renowned for his Royal Shakespeare Company stage designs and Tower of London poppies installation), and enter through a series of five ethereal sections; Creating Alice, Filming Alice, Reimagining Alice, Staging Alice and finally, Being Alice.

The Must-See Fashion Exhibitions of 2020

Senior Curator of Theatre and Performance at the V&A, Kate Bailey said: ‘With our world- class collections of art, design and performance and founding mission to inspire the next generation, the V&A is the perfect place for an exhibition on the cultural impact of Alice in Wonderland across artistic disciplines. Alice encourages us all to question, to learn, to explore, and to dream – discovering why she’s an endless source of inspiration for some of the world’s most creative minds has been an extraordinary adventure. We look forward to welcoming visitors of all ages into Alice’s magical and mind-bending Wonderland, to imagine their own world on the other side of the Looking Glass.’
