Architecture of London Exhibition

July 26 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Architecture of London

Currently showing at Guildhall Art Gallery, Architecture of London spans from the 17th century to the present day to illustrate how London’s ever-changing cityscape has inspired visiting and resident artists over four centuries. Featuring 80 works by over 60 artists and drawings from the City of London Corporation’s extensive art collection, the exhibition also showcases loans from the other major British collections and a number of private collections, including masterpieces by renowned and emerging artists such as Lucian Freud, frank Auerback and Cathering Yass.

Seeing London through the eyes of artists, and from their most beloved windows, streets and painting spots, you are treated to a unique vision of the capital. Highlights include Old St. Paul’s Diptych (1616), a rare Jacobean view of London and one of the first British paintings of a historic monument, and Canaletto’s London Seen Through an Arch of Westminster Bridge (1747). From the intimate to the everyday, the range on offer depicts London in its most eclectic and encompassing form.

Running alongside the Architecture of London exhibition at Guildhall Art Gallery, The Illuminated River showcase features historic paintings of the Thames by artists including Frank Brangwyn, John Atkinson Grimshaw and Norman Wilkinson. Selected by American artist, Leo Villareal, these works have influenced his design for Illuminated River, an ambitious ten-year-long public art project that will connect up to 15 of London’s iconic bridges via a light network, starting with London, Cannon Street, Southwark and Millennium bridges this summer.
