The Best Art Exhibitions in London

An exhibition exploring British Surrealism through 70 works by artists which contributed to shaping the cultural movement. The showcase celebrates the official centenary of Surrealism in 1920 – in which French writer and founder André Breton began experimenting with surrealist writing – and all that the movement embodies, such as dreams, mischief, desire and the unconscious.

Enter through a series of rooms, each encompassing a different surrealist theme, from dreams to political aspirations, sexuality and the irrational, in which the concepts of imagination and creativity will be explored in the context of today’s political climate.

Curator of the exhibition, Dr David Boyd Haycock commented: ‘Surrealism was probably the most exciting, transgressive and bizarre art movement of the twentieth century. Its impact on a wide range of British artists, including a number of radical female artists, was enormous. A century after its first official appearance, it is an appropriate moment to expose new audiences to roots of surrealism in British culture.’

The Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, Jennifer Scott said: ‘If you thought surrealism was solely born in France, think again! There is often something absurd and imaginative within British creativity, from Shakespeare to Lewis Carroll to Henry Moore. Visitors will be invited to embark on their own adventures into the illogical through some spectacular loans and inventive exhibition design; it is not to be missed.’
