Earth Day Season at Somerset House

April 16 2019 - April 29 2019

Somerset House

To celebrate Earth Day 2019, Somerset House are hosting a fortnight of events and installations exploring one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change. Highlights include:

  • Reduce Speed Now: American artist and environmental activist Justin Brice Guariglia has created a major new installation for the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court, formed using nine large solar-powered LED signs. The project brings together the voices of activists, poets and philosophers from around the world, including 16-year-old Swedish political activist Greta Thunberg, who recently inspired thousands of young people across the UK to protest against political inaction on climate change. There are also extracts from French philosopher and sociologist Bruno Latour’s publications, aphorisms from eco-theorist Timothy Morton, and thoughts from Guariglia himself.
  • The Anxious Ocean and The Moon-Bathers: Somerset House Studios artists, Hyphen-Labs, explore a dystopian vision of a post-human future in their new immersive art installation. Through graphics, animation and 3D works, the legacy of humanity is reimagined through the eyes of the ocean.
  • Khaos Spirit: Following two installations at the National Trust’s Speke Hall and The Hepworth Wakefield, artist Serena Korda has created a new work which explores our relationship with the natural elements. This takes the form of a new flag flying above the Somerset House courtyard, alongside an audio piece formed using a handcrafted aeolian harp.
  • Earth Day Late: Meet the artists behind the installations at a special late-night event, complete with snacks and drinks using ‘waste’ produce from Skye Gyngell’s acclaimed Spring restaurant. 16 April, free to attend
