Spanning over 300 speakers and 100 events, the Essex Book Festival is returning this year in celebration of the 400th anniversary of The Mayflower, under the brand-new theme ‘Brave New Worlds’. Expect appearances and author talks from the likes of Jess Phillips MP (on her bestselling book Truth to Power), renowned Scottish crime writer Val McDermid, and author of The Girl with the Louding Voice, Abi Dare, as well as progressional talks and events surrounding climate change, workshops fashioned for writers, poetry performances and much more, all for an entire month…

The Best Literary Festivals of 2020


The annual festival always delivers a month filled with exciting literary-inspired events, workshops and talks, ideal for all the family. This year, news and current affair-themed events include a talk with Jess Phillips MP at the Anglia Ruskin University about her bestselling book Truth to Power, whilst The Index on Censorship, ‘the voice of free expression’ is returning to the festival to host The Power of Protest: Where Should We Draw the Line where Observer columnist and presenter Kenan Malik, human rights activist Peter Tatchell and actor Stella Odunlami will be discussing the right to protest. Dr Magdalena Zawisza-Riley will be discussing her thought-provoking new book Advertising, Gender and Society, Jason Cowley, editor of New Statesman will be talking Reaching for Utopia, and Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE, author of The Book of the Moon will share her fascination for space science. 

Author talks include that of crime writer Val McDermid, historian Dr. Simon Targett and novelist Lucy Foley. There will also be an array of immersive poetry and spoken word events, from an audio-visual performance inspired by JG Ballard’s The Drowned World to prison-related stories shared from the back of a prison van.
