Foraging Fortnight

August 31 2019 - September 15 2019

Foraging Fortnight
Gerardo Jaconelli

A new festival is coming to Scotland, centred around one of this year’s hottest food trends: foraging. From woodland walks to supper clubs, all events are a celebration of wild food, designed to encourage exploration of the country’s diverse landscape. Over 100 events will be taking place across five Scottish regions, from the rolling hills of Lanarkshire to the golden beaches of Fife to the mountains of Moray to the woodlands of Loch Lomond to the islands of Orkney.

One of the biggest events is The Scottish Wild Food Festival, set on the beautiful Cardross Estate. Here visitors are invited to take part in hands-on foraging, folklore walks, mindful workshops and one-table feasts from the likes of Buck & Birch’s Rupert Waites and Marysia Paszkowska of Monachyle Mhor.

Elsewhere there’s the Clyde Valley Apple Walk, where visitors are invited to explore Clyde Valley’s heritage apple trees with a historical walk through Kirkfield Community Orchard. In Moray, meanwhile, visitors are invited to learn about the marine life and edible seaweeds there, with demonstrations of how to cook coastal ingredients. And in Orkney, glacier guide and wilderness instructor Zeki Basan will be discussing the skills of survival used in the past in Scotland and by indigenous people today. Food and culture connoisseur from Swedish Lapland Eva Gunnare will also be running events across all five regions, where she’ll be sharing insights on foraging in the Arctic Circle.

Catharine Idle, Programme Coordinator for LEADER in Fife – the company funding the project – said: “This is the first time an event like this has taken place in Scotland and I’m delighted by the strength, diversity and ambition of the programme. From mindful workshops and wild food feasts to talks from internationally renowned wilderness experts, Foraging Fortnight truly celebrates Scotland’s rural areas and shows the wealth of opportunities for everyone to get involved in foraging.”
