Grand Designs Live: Eco-Conscious in 2018

October 10 2018 - October 14 2018

Grand Designs Live

Grand Designs Live, the go-to exhibition for home improvements, is back for its October edition with a new initiative to tackle single-use plastic. The Birmingham-based show is based on the popular Channel 4 series presented by Kevin McCloud, who comments ‘our planet is clearly in crisis, and we have to figure out how to reverse the damage we’re doing to it.’ Taking matters into their own hands, Grand Designs Live this month will have a strong eco-conscious focus, with objectives such as managing global recourses sustainably, ‘by changing the way we manufacture, use, repurpose and recycle what we need’.

Working closely with the environmental campaigning community Friends of The Earth as their official charity partner, visitors to Grand Designs Live will be provided with refillable bottles to use during their time at the event. Aiming to reduce plastic pollution over the course of the event is a key objective of Craig Bennett, Friends of the Earth Chief Executive who says that in the simple step of getting rid of ‘unnecessary, throw-away plastic items’ like disposable plastic bottles ‘is an important first step towards dealing with the pollution crisis we all face.’ Additionally, the show is also working with Amsterdam-based Join the Pipe, who sell water tapping points and reusable water bottles to combat the use of pre-packaged spring water that harshly pollutes the environment, who’ll bring one of their fantastically innovative water refill stations to the Central Bar. With the understanding that many people do in fact want the option of re-filling their water bottles, Join the Pipe’s Managing Director Andrew Eversden’s goal is to ‘make clean drinking water accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world’, starting with the hundreds of visitors who will visit Grand Designs Live this month in Birmingham’s NEC.

The talks and seminars line up links flawlessly with the Eco-Conscious theme with informative panel discussions, quality talks and art installations. Make sure to check out the Grand Theatre on the 10th to listen to a panel of eco-experts including Friends of the Earth, Join the Pipe and designer Stella Conran who’ll speak about reversing the vicious cycle of use and pollution; a talk presented by Chris Billingham who’ll look at the ‘stylish but sustainable side of upcycling’; and Stella Corrall’s art installation at the Central Bar made entirely from recycled bottle tops and straws. There’ll also be expert advice, live-demonstrations and the chance to see the very best eco-innovations around.
