London Art Week

June 28 2019 @ 10:00 am - July 5 2019 @ 6:00 pm

London Art Week’s flagship summer event is an impressive showcase of the capital’s leading galleries, specialising in the very best of pre-contemporary paintings, drawings, sculpture and decorative art available on the market. Running from 28 June to 5 July, not only is this a chance to see exhibitions ranging from Medieval Art to Menzel, visitors can enjoy the rare opportunity to meet and greet the dealers who know and love their artworks like the backs of their hands. With 50 exhibitions in total – 13 of which are flying over from Europe and the US – this is the biggest London Art Week so far, covering a massive 5,000 years of art.

One of the most extraordinary pieces to be unveiled is a Royal Mortlake tapestry, commissioned by Charles I but lost for a hundred years previously. Staged by S Franses of St James’s, it was originally part of a set of nine tapestries based on the story of Vulcan and Venus from Homer’s Odyssey.

For curious minds that are neither art savvy nor deep pocketed enough, London Art Week reveals the secret depths (and heights) of London’s art scene. With a handy map designed by Adam Dant to help you find the pots of cultural gold that you would have completely missed otherwise – tucked away in alleys or above your eyeline in tiny terraces. You’ll see Mayfair and St James for what it really symbolises for the fine arts world.  While London’s museums and historic houses are heaving with tourists, some of the best things come in the most unassuming of packages – particularly when it comes to art galleries, we’ve found.

27 June to 5 July with talks and events scheduled throughout the week. Galleries are open late on 2 July until 9pm.

Exhibitions are hosted at a wide range of participating galleries and auction houses in historic Mayfair and St James’s.

Get your hands on a map off the website and yourselves to Mayfair.
