For a son et lumière (sound and light) experience no like no other, visit Mark Leckey’s latest exhibition at the Tate Britain for an immersive and atmospheric journey through the artist’s adolescent encounters, visions and sentiments.

The innovative Industrial Light & Magic exhibitionist will convert the museum’s gallery space into an engrossing instillation spotlighting ideas surrounding youth, class, memory and nostalgia. Among a plethora of new and previous art works and sculptures, visitors will witness a true-to-size model of a motorway flyover on the Mid Wirral Motorway (M53), a nostalgic acknowledgement to the artist’s childhood memories of playing at the unconventional location with his friends. The bridge is the exhibition centre piece in which compelling videos will be projected in an enthralling illusion, bringing the overpass to life with Leckey’s recollections.

A fascinating audio-visual installation based on a supernatural encounter Leckey once experienced under the bridge, titled Under Under In 2019, will also feature, in which the contemporary artist said: ‘Many of my works have their wellspring in things and experiences from my childhood and youth that still haunt me.’ Visitors can also expect a fusion of folklore, ‘fairy raids’, and authentic memories in an audio play based on the encounters five teenagers experience under a haunted motorway bridge.

The exhibition will also showcase two of the Turner Prize winner’s original and groundbreaking works, the explorative ‘nightlife’-inspired short film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore 1999, and Dream English Kid, 1964 – 1999 AD 2015, a fusion of ‘found memories’ compiled from music, ads, and other sources of shared encounters.

Whether you’re an avid follower of Leckey’s work, or entirely new to the contemporary artist’s visions, O’ Magic Power of Bleakness promises to be an immersive experience for all to appreciate.
