In a spectacular UK premièr, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival and Teatro Dei Venti are bringing Herman Melville’s Moby Dick back to life at Guildhall Yard on 22 June at 8pm. With ingenious staging, physical theatre and circus, this Italian street theatre production tells the story of Captain Ahab’s ship and his obsessive search for revenge. Expect acrobats, actors, musicians and breath-taking feats of mechanical engineering, accompanied by archaic drum beats from the Campania region of southern Italy.

The performance is part of an impressive line-up of UK and international artists, commissioned by the City of London Corporation to present street theatre, dance performances, exhibitions, guided walking tours and art installations to the city’s inhabitants and visitors. Inspired by a number of key historical dates, the six-month programme of more than 50 mostly free-to-attend events, Fantastic Feats: the building of London, includes the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (1819–91), the civil engineer responsible for creating London’s sewer system, which was crucial in reducing the cholera epidemics in the capital; the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci; the 125th anniversary of the completion of Tower Bridge; and the joint 150th anniversary of the openings of Blackfriars Bridge and Holborn Viaduct.

Later in July, Wild, a newly-created outdoor production by world-renowned dance-circus production company, Motionhouse, sees performers navigate a maze of poles using just their bodies.
