April 24 2018

Bahman Mohasses' Il Minotauro fa Paura alla Gente per Bene

Where? Sotheby’s

What?  Sotheby’s will be presenting their 20th Century Art/Middle East auction during their Orientalist and Middle Eastern Art week this Spring. A collection of influential works from respected artists around the globe will be up for sale. Open to the public on 24 April only, Londoners can expect to encounter vibrant, international modern and contemporary arts, with the chance to own work from some of the most sought-after artists from the modern era to the contemporary period.

Highlights from the collection include artists with record breaking sales: the likes of Bahman Mohasses, Monir Farmanfarmaian, Mahmoud Said, Saliba Douaihy, Charles Hossein Zenderoudi, Antoine Malliarakis Mayo, Farid Belkahia, Ahmed Mater, Ramses Younan and many more.

From pioneering icon of Iranian modernism, Bahman Mohasses is Il Minotauro fa Paura alla Gente per Bene – an oil on canvas created in 1966 and now worth an estimated £280,000- £350,000. One of the most rare works by Bahman Mohasses, the piece represents the artist’s life and reveals how he fought with demons, loneliness and alienation.

Monir Farmanfarmaian’s Recollections I is a more recent piece of art from 2008 and is now worth an estimated £160,000- £200,000. The mirrored, mosaic, reverse-glass painting represents the unexplored traditions with which Monir had grown up, especially geometry craftsmanship. Her love of gardens and fascination with colour and form shines out of the piece.

Up for auction, for the very first time, is Mahmoud Said’s Adam and Eve oil on panel from 1937. Estimated to sell at £300,000- £500,000, the piece shows the Quranic icons, Adam and Eve featured in a desert oasis.

Antoine Malliarakis Mayo’s works were heavily themed around sensuality and eroticism, La Clairière (The Meadow) in particular. The oil on canvas piece of art was created in 1970 and will be sold for an estimated amount of £15,000- £20,000.
