There is no publisher as iconic as Penguin and no series as revered as Penguin Classics, so book lovers and literary glitterati can rejoice at the launch of Happy Reading’s pop-up in Shoreditch.
Bringing back the stars of your A-Level English Literature syllabus, you’ll fall in love with old classics all over again, as Pride and Prej and Jane Eyre find a new home in trendy East London. All 1,200 of its Classic novels are shown in a display that will make bibliophiles weak at the knees, and while we’d be perfectly content whiling away many an hour browsing the bookshop and flicking through our favourites in their designated reading corners, Happy Reading are also using the space for talks, workshops and as a general bookish hang-out spot.
The events, hosted by Refinery 29, include “Beyond the Literary Canon”, a talk hosted by Black Girls’ Book Club to discuss Nella Larsen’s renowned title, Passing. As well as The Happy Reader Book Club, a Penguin Classics magazine made in collaboration with The Gentlewoman and Fantastic Man. Who said books are boring?
