Making her first UK solo debut at the spectacular methodist church-turned contemporary gallery space, Zabludowicz Collection, Shana Moulton’s eccentric exhibition, comprising of enthralling video works, sculptural installations and an array of exciting new projects, delves into the depths of ‘feminist spirituality’, exploring a number of important and current themes from the wellness industry to ecological fragility.

An uplifting and comical exhibition, Moulton draws on her alter-ego Cynthia, whom became established in 2002 when the New York-based artist began her other-worldly collection Whispering Pines, inspired by the California senior citizen mobile-home park that her parents once operated. A combination of video, installations, fantastical costumes and performances commenting on the connection between spirituality and consumerism, visitors will experience this psychedelic and meaningful world Moulton has created within the heart of Belsize Park.

Delight in Moulton’s latest work, a single-channel video showcased in the Zabludowicz Collection’s Main Hall which explores the concept of a woman trapped inside a tower, alluding to the folkloric tale of Saint Barbara. A fusion of spiralling video monitors, a six meter-long pink tower structure, and captivating images and sounds centring self-actualization and self-healing, the pièce de résistance artwork stands as the focal point of the exhibition.

Moulton draws attention to the environment in the Rear Gallery, as Cynthia battles between her ecological aspirations and anxieties about leaving the house, emphasizing the often  problematic connection between technology and nature. In the Middle Gallery, visitors will witness Personal Steam Interface (2019), an illuminative and whimsical piece of work detailing Cynthia’s attempts to establish a cyberspace connection, posing 21st Century google-esque questions such as ‘how old is Jennifer Lopez?’, ‘when is black friday?’ and ‘where is the love?’.

An engrossing and timely exhibition, Moulton’s extraordinary body is work is not to be missed.
