Sony World Photography Awards 2020

April 17 2020 - May 4 2020

Maximilian Mann
Maximilian Mann, Germany, Shortlist, Professional competition, Environment, Sony World Photography Awards 2020

Returning to Somerset House this spring, the Sony World Photography Awards showcase the very best of contemporary photography. Spanning countless countries, subjects and landscapes, the spectacular exhibition is a highlight of London’s cultural calendar, providing insight into cultures and lifestyles around the world – not for nothing is a picture said to tell a thousand words. Anthropological context aside, the colourful wildlife section alone makes the World Photography Awards a must-visit for families and animal-lovers.

The 2020 Awards received the highest number of entries yet, with over 135,000 photographs submitted across its ten categories and four competitions (Professional, Open, Youth and Student). This year, a new Environment category has been introduced this year in recognition of the growing importance of this topic in both fine art photography and photojournalism. Other categories, from architecture to portraiture and the more open-ended ‘creative’ and ‘discovery’ sections, allow photographers to explore a huge range of subjects, telling personal stories and bringing attention to overlooked issues around the world.

The vast exhibition will present all of the winning and shortlisted images, also exhibiting individual projects from the winners of 2019’s competition. The previous year’s winners had the creative freedom to pursue their interests in the long-term, having been given a grant of $7000 and Sony imaging equipment to develop their projects over a year.

Rosewood London – Holborn, WC1

A standout of London’s not-insignificant number of luxury hotels, the Rosewood occupies a Grade II-listed, Belle Époque building, sensitively restored to give the appearance of a stylish London residence. It’s also home to the ever-popular Scarfes Bar, an atmospheric space decorated with paintings by satirist Gerald Scarfe.
