The Age of Decadence

June 5 2019 @ 10:00 am - June 19 2019 @ 5:00 pm

Romina Ressia, ‘Girl Wearing A Helmet’ and ‘Woman With A Water Pistol’, 2018

A photography collection with a focus on fashion and femininity, The Age of Decadence at the House of Fine Art (HOFA) is Romina Ressia‘s first solo exhibition in England. Featuring her critically-acclaimed series ‘How Would Have Been?’ including the award-winning photographs ‘Pop-corn’ and ‘Double Bubble Gum’, it comes to London this June.

The impact of classical artists like Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Velazquez is recognisable in the palettes and ambiance of her works. Indeed their compositional and stylistic aesthetic demonstrate the combined influence of her training in fashion photography, fine art and art direction. Ressia’s masterful use of luxurious textures and impeccably structured scenes and her artful attention to her models have attracted fashion magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair to both feature and commission Ressia’s works.

Since the successful début of ‘How Would Have Been?’ in 2013, Ressia has since exhibited her works in New York, Milan, Paris, Zurich and Buenos Aires, and received many awards including Photographer of the Year 2017 at the International Color Awards. This series, which was her first fine art collection and first critical success, continues to grow and new additions are set to be unveiled at the upcoming London exhibition.

The theatricality of the models’ defiant glares and sideways glances lend the objects in shot the air of props. Conceptually this prompts us to conceive of gender as a performance. The anachronism central to each of Ressia’s photographs – the contrast between the dated scenes and clothing and the strikingly modern objects – therefore questions the perceived progression of the role of women in society. How far have we come? Of course this is all at play in the collection’s title. The use of the auxiliary verb ‘would’ preserves an echo of the future tense while talking about the past. The uncertainty and anxiety that this convergence in time provokes is powerful. The Age of Decadence exhibition promises to probe our minds  individuals as well as collectively as a society, offering a social commentary on the modern world, as well as our past and future.
