British brand Daniel w. Fletcher launched London Fashion Week SS23 with a tribute to the city, sustainability and the late Queen.

Kicking off London Fashion Week at The Londoner Hotel, Daniel w. Fletcher unveiled a collection that paid homage to the people who have made the UK capital a global fashion hotspot. From Savile Row tailors to King’s Road punks, season football-goers to the royal family, ‘Stand and Deliver’ presented an eclectic snapshot of London’s past – and its interwoven place in the present.

Opening with a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, the show was marked with a minute’s silence and a first look dedicated to the monarch. Made from British wool, the all-black morning suit was styled with a singular black armband in respect of the Period of National Mourning.

The subsequent looks presented were full of reflections on the past, not just in terms of picking up on London’s historical fashion scene – marked by Prince of Wales check coats, rowing blazers, faux fur stoles and pleated skirts – but for Fletcher himself. The designer, who graduated from Central Saint Martins almost 10 years ago, also looks back on the last decade through his past collections and successes. ‘Stand and Deliver’, while focused around British heritage pieces, is therfore also built on a language of self-referencing. Elements from previous collections, like the designer’s SS19 corsets and AW20 racing jackets in postbox red and banker-boy blue, are given a refresh for the new season ahead.

Three models walking the runway lined up together

While offering a vibrant palette of visual references, from Swinging Sixties mini skirts to 1970s punk rock leathers, the collection also incorporates popular (and timeless) looks we’re familar with today. Corsets are cinched over tank tops, leather jackets are neatly buttoned over matching trousers and the classic trench is revived in black and white. In a rapidly evolving landscape, the cyclical nature of such trends doesn’t go a miss.

The collection is also Fletcher’s most sustainable yet, having been created in collaboration with Nona Source, which sources quality deadstock fabrics from LVMH’s Maisons. All of the looks to hit the runway were made entirely from deadstock, highlighting the possibilities for sustainability in high fashion. As noted by the brand, the collection ‘proves what can be achieved within the constructs of working responsibly, and ultimately creatively, to push to new understandings of finesse’.
