Hotel Review: Mondrian Shoreditch

A trendy base for a big night out in Shoreditch

Shoreditch has quite rightly earned its reputation as one of London’s more edgy and key creative hubs. From hosting the launch of Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty lingerie brand to playing a key part in London Pride, Shoreditch continues to be at the forefront of cultural innovation. And Mondrian, launched last year in 2021 by The Reuben Brothers, is no different. With its stylish interiors, buzzing bars, restaurants and its role as host to an innovative, creative and forward-thinking members club, Mondrian Shoreditch perfectly encapsulates its community’s ethos.

STAY

entrance hall hotel

The Mondrian is positioned in the heart of trendy and bustling Shoreditch, with its array of markets, vintage shops and stylish bars. It stands in a prime East London location between Shoreditch High Street and Old Street. And with its warehouse-style red brick exterior, huge windows and fairy light trimmed top, it fits right into its artsy neighbourhood.

Inside, it’s characterised by contemporary and urban interiors – think plentiful exposed brick, high ceilings, black paned windows and biophilia galore. It’s effortlessly trendy yet luxurious; there’s artwork of creative icons, from John Lennon to Audrey Hepburn, hung up throughout the hotel. And while the public areas are open and spacious, the rooms feel private and intimate, offering the perfect balance.

There’s 120 rooms to choose from, ranging from the standard king to the penthouse suite. Each of these follow in the hotel’s theme of urban and contemporary luxury and feature an exposed white brick wall, large windows, stylish furniture and a huge comfy bed. Relaxation is made a priority; you could easily spend the night snuggled up and stretched out in the king size bed and indulge in a luxurious lie-in the next morning. The bathrooms are no less deluxe, with their marble cladding, steam showers and cream and black interiors opening up the floor to an hours-long pamper session.

Elsewhere in the hotel, there’s no shortage of amenities. For wellness, there’s the gym and spa offering luxury treatments. And thanks to the Mondrian’s partnership with several beauty and health brands like VOYA, OTO CBD, Natura Bissé and Lola’s Apothecary, you can even buy a range of hot products while you’re there.

Or, in keeping with Shoreditch style, if you’re feeling a bit more like a drink than a detox, head up to the rooftop bar and pool. In the evening it’s lit up by twinkly fairy lights and you’ll find stunning cityscape views as you sip your drink.

The Mondrian is also home to The Curtain Members Club, a well-known club which prides itself on being a creative hub to allow forward-thinking and diverse individuals to both work and play together. Members will have access to Mondrian facilities, as well as The Curtain Club’s exclusive extras – the Design Studio, an ideal co-working space, and the Rose Lounge & Bar – and an impressive calendar of special events.

DO

This hotel allows the option to not have to – or want to – leave. But if you feel you must, Shoreditch has a plethora of options to keep you entertained. If you fancy a day of browsing, head to the iconic Brick Lane and sift through vintage gems or grab a bite from its abundance of eateries, from bagel shops to street-food stalls. After, why not head to the well-established Columbia Road Flower Market for a houseplant or succulent to add to your home, or make someone smile with a bouquet. It’s also brimming with great cultural events and endless art galleries, including Rich Mix, a creative venue which houses a cinema as well as being host to a range of cultural, comedy and art events; there’s always something to do.

The Best Vintage Shops in London: Sustainable Shopping

For the night owls, Shoreditch will not disappoint. After an evening of drinks at Christina’s or dinner at Bibo’s, head out to explore the wealth of nightlife opportunities that Shoreditch has to offer. Choose from the array of bars, like the newly opened Roxanne or head to one of Shoreditch’s infamous clubs – XOYO anyone?

EAT

Christina's Shoreditch

If you’re staying at Mondrian, you must have dinner at Bibo, Dani Garcia’s first ever London culinary experience. First though, stop for a drink at Christina’s. It’s an all-day café and sando bar, and follows in the hotel’s urban and trendy vibe, with its high ceilings, pattern-painted walls, biophilic décor and fresh colourful interiors. The drinks list is extensive and carefully curated, with delicious cocktails and wine from specially selected producers which have proven to have a good ethos.

Just below Christina’s is Mondrian’s culinary piece-de-resistance: Bibo. It’s a destination restaurant, so good that it will attract customers to just come for supper, or leave diners feeling so satisfied and full, they will practically roll straight to their rooms after dinner.

Bibo Mondrian Shoreditch

Emulating a Spanish vibe, it resembles a courtyard setting, with orange walls and a red tiled bar to give off that Mediterranean warmth, as well as a statement ceiling with a mirage of little white fish swimming. Throughout the restaurant, you’ll find coloured pots placed on shelves, eclectic and colourful artwork and plentiful leafy plants. There’s a buzzing atmosphere, but not so loud you can’t hear each other or the waiter. Even on a Tuesday evening, Bibo remains practically full – demonstratively proving the restaurant’s success.

With world-famous chef Dani Garcia at the helm, it’s unsurprising that the food is so good. The menu is comprised of delicious Spanish dishes, from tapas-sized plates to raciones-sized portions; expect choosing to be difficult. Stand out dishes include the oxtail brioche, padrón peppers, and the creamy tortilla. And in traditional Spanish style, wash it down with a jug of sangria.

Mondrian will also soon be home to Laurel’s on the Roof, a new rooftop bar and restaurant inspired by 1970s Hollywood. Opening on Thursday 5 May, guests can expect to enjoy Californian-style dishes and drinks, like sea bream tacos and spicy Margaritas, in a stunning rooftop setting with a laidback yet sophisticated atmosphere.
