In the works for almost two years, Film Club will finally air in October

At the start of 2024, the BBC revealed it was working with Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood on a brand new six-part rom-com – which the star was also writing along with fellow actor-writer Ralph Davis. And this would quickly turn out to be even more of a coup than it initially seemed: around one year later Wood’s role as Chelsea in The White Lotus season 3 would catapult the home-grown star to international acclaim. Meanwhile in a supporting role we find none other than Adolescence star Owen Cooper, who in July became the youngest male ever to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for his role as Jamie Miller in the Netflix hit.

Also starring Suranne Jones who recently made her Netflix debut, this heartwarming rom-com is giving us serious Mix Tape vibes. Here’s everything you need to know before Film Club launches in October.

Directed by Catherine Morshead, six-part miniseries Film Club centres on Evie (Wood) and Noa (Nabhaan Rizwan), two best friends who watch films together every Thursday in Evie’s garage. It’s a weekly escape from the world for Evie – and an opportunity to transform her mum’s (Suranne Jones) garage into the world of whatever film she, Noa and the rest of the club will be watching. And it’s also an excuse for Evie to spend a few uninterrupted hours with her best friend.

The series opens with the 198th film club session, which also marks six months since Evie last left the house following a ‘wobble’. Tonight, things are different: Noa’s got big news. His dream job is whisking him off to the other side of the country, forcing these friends to reckon with the romantic feelings that have always hidden beneath the surface of their platonic relationship.

Evie already has a boyfriend, Josh (Adam Long), and neither of them are the best when it comes to emotions. But this time those emotions might be impossible to ignore…

Filmed in Manchester earlier this year, the BBC tells us to expect ‘a piercingly funny and utterly heart-warming screenwriting debut from two of Britain’s most exciting voices’. That’s Wood along with Ralph Davis (who you might know from SAS Rogue Heroes and Life After Life).

Elsewhere in Film Club, we will meet Evie’s eccentric family: her fiercely loving single mum Suz (Jones) and her sister Izzie (Liv Hill), as well as her boyfriend-cum-man-of-the-house Josh (Long). ‘Film Club is a witty and emotional show about love and family, about whether we should follow our hearts or heads, and being in love with a friend,’ the BBC summarises.
