Sophie Lis On Her Personal Style Rules

The jeweller fills us in on the brands she loves, her shopping hacks and the rules that define her fashion ethos

Sophie Lis has built a career around designing jewellery pieces that come pre-packed with sentimental value. The diamond earrings she designed for her own wedding sparked the creation of her eponymous brand, now a Notting Hill fixture (you’ll find it a stone’s throw from Portobello Road) with a devoted celebrity following. Her cosmos-inspired designs, from shooting stars and moons to lightning bolts and compasses, are designed to be worn daily, stacked up the ear and treasured for a lifetime – which tells you everything you need to know about Lis’ own personal style. Hers is a buy less, buy better philosophy, where sharp tailoring, great denim and a hardworking edit of classics do the heavy lifting, and the jewellery does the talking.

With the summer holidays on the horizon, we caught up with Lis on her personal style: the daily uniform she dresses up and down, the pieces that earn a place in a light suitcase, her formula for a night out, the under-the-radar labels she loves to champion and the resale hack that recently landed her a vintage designer bag. Read on for the full scoop.

My Style: Sophie Lis

Daily uniform?

Jeans (Khaite’s Danielle in non-stretch denim), a crisp COS t-shirt and a great tailored jacket, probably Saint Laurent. I throw on a cap for bad hair days and dress up or down.

Style crush?

Phoebe Philo forever. Her less is more vibe deeply resonates.

Go-to pieces for summer?

I pack light: Eres swimwear, oversize linen shirts from WNU, cut-off vintage Levi’s, great sandals (The Row), sunglasses (Bottega, Saint Laurent), a few books, Dermalogica SPF and a raffia bag. I love a headscarf for a touch of nostalgic elegance, which can double up as a wrap after swimming. And silk slip dresses that can be worn for anything, from beach to black tie.

Favourite accessories?

Always jewellery. Every piece you own should tell a story.

Night out?

A great tailored suit gives me confidence, paired with a beautiful lace, sheer or silk top, which is feminine and alluring without revealing anything. Jewellery, a fab pair of heels, a clutch and I’m off.

The piece that gives instant wow?

Diamond earrings really draw the eye and light up the face. They are anti-ageing too as the sparkle illuminates the skin. My all-time favourites are my Fallen Star earrings.

And the one that makes you stand taller?

I’m 6ft, but not afraid of a heel and being the tallest in a room. Aquazzura are my go-to (the most comfortable shoes in a variety of heights) and Jimmy Choo‘s spin on the classic pump.

Under-the-radar labels?

I love supporting friends’ brands. Everything Alex Eagle does is knockout; Skiim Paris for wide leg leather trousers (Bottega vibes); Galvan for a black tie gown or evening coat; Piece of White , another Notting Hill brand, has a to-die-for three-piece linen suit.

Style hacks?

Shop against trends. I set up alerts for pieces I am looking for on resale platforms like Vestiaire Collective and auction sites. I recently got lucky with a little Fendi baguette. I love the excitement of the hunt and satisfaction of a bargain. The aim is to build an archive of classics to pass down to my daughters.
