Seeing Messeria L’Olivo for the first time, we were completely blown away. The sheer scale of the Masseria, its beautifully considered interiors, and the acres of ancient olive groves surrounding it was breathtaking. It’s one of those rare places that looks even more spectacular in real life than the photos.

From the moment we drove up the olive tree-lined driveway, there was an overwhelming sense of calm. Each morning began with long, leisurely breakfasts under the pergola, delicious local fruit, freshly baked pastries and endless cups of rich Italian coffee. At night, we loved sitting out under the stars with a glass of local Puglian Primitivo listening to the cicadas.

On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the lovely Angelo, our personal concierge in Puglia, who greeted us with a fantastic guided tour of the Masseria and a delicious welcome hamper. He was incredibly responsive whenever we needed anything – from restaurant reservations to private chefs – making the entire experience completely seamless and removing any stress.

During our stay, he even helped to organise a private boat excursion for us from Gallipoli. We spent the day exploring Puglia’s breathtaking coastline, swimming in crystal-clear waters, diving from the boat and paddleboarding in secluded coves. The highlight was a delicious fresh seafood pasta, cooked on board by the captain’s lovely wife. Heaven!

Our boat trip from Otranto was another unforgettable experience – perfect for those looking to explore Puglia by water. Just a 10-minute drive from Masseria L’Olivo, this charming medieval walled town boasts a magnificent castle, cobbled streets, sweeping Adriatic views, and quite possibly the best gelato I’ve ever tasted. Sourced from Gelateria del Fico in Otranto, the Stracciatella flavour was unmatched. 

For more foodie daydreams, head to Orte in Baia dell’Orte. Think delicious, locally caught seafood, organic farm-to-table vegetable dishes, all set against the most spectacular backdrop of crystal-clear turquoise waters. (An after lunch dip is an absolute must!)
