The Royal George

Nestled in the heart of Tintern, in the Wye Valley, one of the oldest pubs in Wales, The Royal George has entered a new chapter, proudly reclaiming its original name as part of the transformation – with local legend saying the building even contains timber salvaged from the 18th-century shipwreck HMS Royal George, adding an extra layer of intrigue to a place already steeped in history. With Tintern’s ancient abbey ruins as its neighbour, the storied riverside inn is stepping confidently into its new era, restored back to its natural grace and elegance,  and with a new culinary vision across its four unique dining experiences, all under the eye of executive chef Gareth Hope.

The Royal George Tintern

This unique prize offers a two-night bed and breakfast stay for two, including dinner on one evening in The Upper Deck restaurant, with a chance to unwind and enjoy both the natural surroundings of the area, alongside the luxury, comfort and warmth that can be found at the historic country hotel. Welsh interior designer, Camilla Kelly of The Mint List, has sympathetically brought the building back to life, with its heritage front and centre. Original Welsh flagstones and timber beams have been lovingly revealed, preserving the architectural details and spirit of the hotel, while an earthy colour palette, tactile soft furnishings and rough-hewn surfaces, reclaimed Welsh Slate, traditional panelling and lime washed paints provide a contemporary, rustic look and feel.

Kelly’s distinctive approach to design is felt in every corner. Known for her ability to layer spaces with character and soul, she has drawn on her expertise in sourcing antique eclectica and custom art pieces from far and wide. These thoughtful additions give The Royal George its rich sense of story, from curated vintage finds to bespoke artworks that connect the interiors with the local history and landscape.

The winner will be staying in The Deane Suite, one of the six Heritage rooms within the hotel, all of which reference notable historical figures and nautical connections within their design, including brothers Charles and John Deane, inventors of the first air-pumped diving helmet who were also involved in salvage operations on the HMS Royal George. Look out for the original ship’s bell retrieved from the wreck which can be found in The Lower Deck Pub where it rings out last orders.

The Royal George Tintern

A place and plate for all occasions, The Royal George champions seasonal menus in its evolving culinary story, working closely with local farmers, growers and foragers, with a zero-compromise policy on quality and traceability. There’s something for everyone – whether it’s a dog walker enjoying a pizza in the garden, someone unwinding over the weekend in The Lower Deck Pub with a pint of Welsh ale and a warm sausage roll with smoky chutney, or a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary with champagne and grilled scallops on the restaurant terrace. At the heart of it all, The Upper Deck Restaurant proudly showcases its signature grilled meats – top-quality cuts, expertly aged and flame-cooked to bring out their full depth of flavour. Dry-aged Herefordshire beef, Monmouthshire pork, vegetables from small-scale growers in the Wye Valley, cheese from across the Welsh countryside, sustainably harvested honey from the resident bees are all on the menu.
