This property is a Mid-Century Modern dream
If there’s one man always guaranteed to make a grand entrance on the red carpet, it’s Colman Domingo. The formet Met Gala co-chair is known for standing out with his fashion choices, often forgoing the usual penguin tuxedo for a bold print, bright colour or daring cape. (You can’t deny the man’s got taste.) And though you may never be able to recreate his most iconic looks, you can do one better by snatching up his LA home.
Look Inside Colman Domingo’s LA Home
‘Everything is an event in my house,’ said Colman Domingo, while taking Architectural Digest on a tour of this very same Los Angeles home in 2021. ‘I only eat off stoneware plates with gold silverware – it really feels like I’m in my own luxury hotel and if I want to live that way, why not?’
And with a home like this, it’s no wonder Domingo felt he was living the five-star life.
The Colour Purple and Euphoria actor first bought this stylish Mid-Century Californian home with his husband, Raúl Domingo (whom he met in a Walgreens parking lot), back in October 2018 for a mere $1.15m.
Named the Hofkin Residence, after its original owners, the home was first built in 1964 and designed by Jules Salkin, a friend and collaborator of renowned American architect John Lautner. Salkin incorporated Wrightian principles across the home, emphasising horizontality, natural materials, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. The property cemented Salkin’s place in the legendary lineage of Southern California Modernism, and was celebrated for its trail-blazing style and one-of-a-kind look.
Located in the city of Downey, just south-east of downtown Los Angeles, Domingo’s home is done up in a classic Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. Having carefully restored and upgraded it throughout his residence, many of the home’s original features remain, including wood-panelled walls, beamed cathedral ceilings, custom cabinetry, a sunken bathtub, built-in furniture and a built-in bar, all anchored by a stylishly sunken living room with a sculptural stone fireplace.
As Domingo explained on his AD tour: ‘I want my home to have a sense of play; I never want it to be fussy. We wanted everything to be vintage or a replica.’
The home’s most notable feature? A wall of colourful tiles in the bathroom which is made up of leftover pieces from Charles Kratka’s iconic mosaic tunnels at Los Angeles International Airport – featured in Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 movie Jackie Brown and an episode of Mad Men – a rarity that can only be found in three other Southern California homes. ‘When I came into this bathroom, I actually had the feeling of “I have to preserve this”,’ Colman told AD. ‘I love this tile so much, and so because I’m insane, I bought a vintage Dior bathrobe to match.’
Spanning 3,450 sqft, this single storey, ranch-style home boasts four bedrooms and five bathrooms, plus a gym, private sauna, and a home office with built-in bookshelves and window seat. The teak kitchen has counter seating for three and a breakfast nook, while the space just off the living room provides a larger dining area. From here, sliding glass doors lead out to the patio and backyard pool, complete with a vintage diving pool and pergola-covered seating area. The home is set within 16,400 sqft of grounds and discreetly hidden away from the street.
Discussing the listing on his Instagram, Domingo reflected on his time here with fondness: ‘This House that we made a Home. Now for sale. It is such a gem. I know the right couple or family will find its way to it. There are memories of pool parties, celebrations, quiet moments of solitude and pure joy.’
