From Altar To Architecture: Inside Katherine Ryan’s Church Conversion

The comedian first moved into this strange apartment back in 2019
As you wander down Mayfield Road, you may notice a ‘for sale’ sign outside a grand, Victorian church. And while you may think this is a calling from God for you to begin your new life as a vicar, this old church is not what it seems. Upon closer inspection, the church is actually a series of converted apartments, bringing a whole, new meaning to the term ‘blessed living’. And one of them has a very famous former resident – and no, we’re not talking about the Holy Spirit. Comedian Katherine Ryan has officially parted ways with her heavenly home.
Katherine Ryan’s Old Apartment Has Blessed The Market
Leaving behind its gothic arches and raised ceilings, comedian Katherine Ryan has officially put her Crouch End apartment up on the market, for a reasonable £825,000. After stepping off the plane from Canada (where she was born and raised), Ryan purchased her first London property in 2016 where she single-handedly raised her eldest daughter, Violet.
Originally built in 1903, when it was then known as St Luke’s Church, this distinctive building has retained many of its architectural features. But, with quiet sermons, a shortage of congregations and mounting maitenance bills, this ecclesiastical structure was eventually forced to close its doors.
God looked back down on the building in the late 80s, however, when it was restored and converted into residential flats. Preserving the much-loved architecture and character of the church, this iconic property has retained many of the unusual features we see today.
Spanning 1,088 sqft, this three-bedroom apartment is split between two floors, with the lower ground floor featuring the family bathroom with two bedrooms opening out onto a private garden. As you walk upstairs to the ground floor, you’re greeted with a large, open plan kitchen and living space – equipped with marble countertops, two integrated ovens and a kitchen island (ideal for hosting). One particularly striking feature of this apartment is the gothic, arched window located in the main living space – as the Bible said, ‘Let there be light’.
Nestled between Stationers Park and the local tennis courts, Mayfield Road boasts boutique shops, French brasseries and independent restaurants at your fingertips – bringing a timeless village appeal to busy London lifestyle.
While Katherine Ryan moved out of the apartment in 2019 when she and her family has upsized, it seems that she hasn’t quite been able to let it go, telling The Sun: ‘I still have fantasies of moving back there’. Holding onto it in case her eldest daughter Violet ever wanted to move back in, she’s been renting out for the past few years. But when Violet recently revealed that she wouldn’t be moving in the pair decided to list it, with the latest social media post dubbing it ‘the museum of Katherine Ryan’.
‘So many happy memories, high ceilings, underfloor bathroom heating, marble kitchen countertops, good energy and formative years there,’ wrote Ryan of the apartment on Instagram. ‘Catchment area for Violet’s sweet single form entry primary school. TAKE ME BACK.’
