That's all

For one of the highest paid actresses in the world, Meryl Streep leads a relatively lowkey lifestyle. While we can easily imagine Miranda Priestly buying up a base in every major fashion capital across the globe, it seems that Caribbean beach houses and Parisian apartments are of little interest to Streep – after all, what more do you need when you already hold the record for the most Academy Awards nominations ever received by an actor? In fact, The Devils Wears Prada star currently only has two properties (that we know of) to her name – one of which she’s owned for over 40 years. Want to discover where else the star has owned homes across her career? Here’s the complete guide to Meryl Streep’s property portfolio.

Salisbury, Connecticut

Just a decade after graduating from the Yale School of Drama, Meryl Streep returned to her university state of Connecticut with her then-husband, the sculptor Don Gummer. Moving to the quiet and historic town of Salisbury in 1985, she and Gummer put down $1.8m for this 90-acre estate which includes a small sheep farm and a 47-acre lake. The house is tucked deep inside the plot with high stone walls and many small buildings secluding it from prying eyes. In addition to the contemporary main house, there is also a pair of barns, a caretaker’s cottage, and a spacious art studio for Gummer. Though the pair separated some time around 2017, it’s believed that they still share the Connecticut home where they raised their four children.

Greenwich Village, New York

A decade after their move to Connecticut (with Streep now on her ninth Oscar nom and second Academy Award), the couple purchased a redbrick Greek Revival-style townhouse for $2.2m. Located in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village, just a few blocks from Washington Square Park, the property was the perfect base for the couple when they needed to be in the Big Apple for work. Dating back to 1845, the 6,585 sqft, six-bedroom residence includes a dining room with enough seating for 16, a kitchen with two ovens, two dishwashers, a wine cooler and warming draws, plus a bar area, outdoor garden and a rooftop garden.

The five-storey property also has 12 ft high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling French windows which frame the views of the street. Meanwhile, upstairs, the primary suite spans the entire length of the top floor, featuring a 25 ft skylight and a 450 sqft Calacatta marble bath tub. The Iron Lady star ended up selling the townhouse to the late Johnson & Johnson heiress Elizabeth ‘Libet’ Johnson for $9.1m in 2005.

Tribeca, New York

Now in need of a new home in NYC, Streep and Gummer picked up a $10.3m Tribeca apartment in 2006, just shortly after selling their Greenwich Village home. Accessible only via a private elevator, the penthouse spans an entire 3,994 sqft floor of the 24-storey River Lofts building at 92 Laight Street. Alongside the four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a freestanding fireplace, the floor-to-ceiling windows and landscaped terraces offer up unobstructed views of the River Hudson. The couple listed the unit for $24.6m in 2018 but were forced to lower the asking price before the property eventually sold for $15.8m in early 2020.

Hollywood Hills, California

For such a big name in Hollywood, it’s remarkable that Meryl Streep avoided owning a property out West for so many years. She eventually caved in 2013 when she purchased a $4.5m mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Built in 1954, the property is known as the Honnold & Rex Research House – having originally been designed by architects Honnold and Rex to showcase innovative materials for Architectural Products magazine. Designed to encourage indoor-outdoor living, the 3,700 sqft, midcentury home features a double-height living room with glass walls, a white brick-inlay fireplace, and a light-filled open plan space. Constructed almost entirely of concrete, wood and glass, the four-bedroom home’s natural materials were selected to promote relaxation. In spite of the tranquil fountains, gardens, pools and walled courtyards which sit outside, Streep didn’t hold onto the property for long, selling it onto actor Alex Rodriguez for $4.8m in 2014.

Pasadena, California

Now in need of a new California base, in 2017 Streep bought up a 3,087 sqft midcentury-modern style home in Pasadena for $3.6m – half a million less than the asking price. Designed by lesser-known midcentury architects Whitney Smith and Wayne Williams, before Streep the property hadn’t changed hands for nearly 50 years. Key features of the three-bedroom, three-bathroom property include the abundant skylights, large windows, exposed cinder block walls, raised hearth fireplace and a common area framed by two solid walls of glass. Alongside the views of the San Gabriel mountains, there’s also a detached office-slash-studio and a swimming pool hidden behind boulders. Despite separating from her husband shortly after the purchase, Streep and Gummer still own the property together to this day.
