The director worked on four of his most beloved films from within the walls of this Hertfordshire house

If you happen to be house hunting and you’ve got nearly £7 million to spare, you’re in luck: Stanley Kubrick’s former home has just hit the market. Here’s everything you need to know.

Inside Stanley Kubrick’s Hertfordshire Home

Living room with bay window, cream and golf sofas, a marble fireplace, and a chandelier.

He might have been born in New York, but film director Stanley Kubrick spent more than half of his life in leafy Hertfordshire – and it’s in Abbots Mead, an eight-bedroom country home on Barnet Lane, that he worked on some of his most iconic films, including The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and A Clockwork Orange.

Kubrick purchased the property in 1965 and ended up living there for 14 years. Since it’s just a stone’s throw from the famous Elstree Studios – where the majority of his films were shot – Kubrick used Abbots Mead as a base from which to manage the production, editing and distribution of each project, even developing new special effects techniques.

The home itself has been carefully extended and modernised, now boasting more than 7,700 square feet of living space across three floors. Downstairs, you’ll find a drawing room, dining room, family room and conservatory, plus a large kitchen/breakfast room and a study. There are plenty of period features on show, from ornate cornices and original doors to elegant fireplaces.

The first floor is occupied by two guest bedroom suites, a further bedroom and a family bathroom – not to mention the principal suite, which features a handsome bay window, a dressing room, and two bathrooms. You’ll also spot an office/studio space.

There are five further bedrooms at the top of the house, but that’s not all: a four-bedroom lodge stands proudly at the front of the estate, and an additional two-bedroom apartment is tucked away above a detached garage block. The best part, however? Nestled within the immaculate formal gardens is a wisteria-covered pergola, a heated swimming pool, and a poolhouse complete with a changing area, shower room, sauna and terrace. (Oh, and the house is topped off with a blue plaque to commemorate Kubrick’s time there. What more could you want from a country home?)
