Sting’s Hampstead Home Has Hit The Market For £11.95M
Celebrity homes are certainly hot commodities, but it’s not just a star-studded list of former residents that makes this house such a rare gem; in fact, it’s one of the oldest surviving houses in Hampstead, believed to date back as far as the 18th century.
Now bearing the name of Frognal, the property initially served as a pub – known at one time as The Three Pigeons, at others as Ye Pilgrims and The Duke of Cumberland – before it became the home of celebrated prima ballerina Tamara Karsavina in the 1950s. (Karsavina was a founding star of the Ballets Russes; the house even boasts a blue plaque honouring her legacy). Sting purchased Frognal in 1980 and eventually sold it to the current owners, who have now listed it for the first time in over 35 years.
It may be discreetly positioned behind a set of gates on a peaceful, tree-lined street, but Frognal’s magnificent façade is hard to miss: ivy spills down from the roof across the entire property, stopping just shy of the handsome front patio. You’ll spot arched period windows and a two-storey gabled porch, and there are plenty more historic features inside, from intricate fireplaces to working shutters.
The house extends to an impressive 4,300 square feet, encompassing six bedrooms, five bathrooms and four reception rooms. There are two sitting rooms, two kitchens and a dining room on the ground floor, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a dressing room on the first floor and an additional three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an office on the top level.
Just as breathtaking as the front of the house is its glorious rear garden – not to mention its sprawling roof terrace, which commands panoramic views of the London skyline. There’s enough off-street parking for up to seven cars, and the delights of Hampstead Village, Kenwood House and Hampstead Heath are all just a few minutes away.
‘Frognal is one of Hampstead’s most treasured addresses; homes here are exceptionally sought-after, making this a very special property to bring to market,’ explains Nier Gigi, head of sales in Savills Hampstead. ‘Grade II listed, this remarkable home is said to be among the oldest surviving houses in the area and is certainly one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture I’ve encountered in my career.’
