Live out your Christmas romcom dreams with these cosy countryside cottages

Tis officially the season for our annual rewatch of The Holiday. And while it’s natural to spend the entire film yearning for Jude Law, Mr Napkin Head is not the only object of our desires. Iris (played by Kate Winslet)’s Surrey cottage is certifiably the dream romcom home – and not just because handsome men have a tendency to stumble onto its doorstep. A quintessentially cosy country bolthole, the film’s Rosehill Cottage (and its surrounding village) have us all dreaming about spending Christmas hibernating deep in the snowy English countryside.

While you may prefer to follow in the footsteps of Cameron Diaz’s Amanda by renting out a Holiday style cottage for the length of your Christmas love affair (and no longer), we’re envious that Winslet’s Iris gets to enjoy this picturesque home all year round. Want a countryside cottage of your home? Here are our three favourite dupes for the cottage in The Holiday that are currently on the market.

Chantry Cottage

Chantry Cottage

Dating all the way back to the 14th century, Chantry Cottage is nestled in the heart of Cotswolds among the rolling countryside of Syde – a small village set between Cirencester and Cheltenham. The Grade II listed property is the ideal chocolate box home, perfect for curling up against a crackling fire with a good book in hand. The earliest part of this historic home is a single hall which still retains part of the original cruck roof construction. Elsewhere downstairs, the home boasts a main reception room with a wood burning stove, an oak and granite kitchen, a dining room with an Aga, a bedroom, and a studio room opening into the courtyard. Spiral up the staircase to discover the sitting room complete with a wood burning stove, and the ensuite principal bedroom, with a further bedroom with vaulted ceilings another floor up.

Outside, wisteria, jasmine and pears dress the honey facade, with a lawn overlooking the Miserden valley, a courtyard, fruit trees, wood and Cotswold stone workshop completing the picture. The surrounding countryside offers up a variety of walks (not to be attempted in the snow in heels with a suitcase in hand à la Amanda), while the village itself is known for its community spirit, playing host to an annual classical music festival at the nearby Syde Manor.

Chantry Cottage is on the market for £1.7m. Find out more at search.savills.com

yeomans cottage

Yeomans

While less historic than Chantry Cottage (with a measly 500 years of history buried in its walls compared to Chantry’s 700), Yeomans is a dead-ringer for The Holiday home. Also Grade II listed, Yeomans has been sensitively restored and updated to combine its 16th century character with the luxuries of 21st century living. Original features of the four to five bedroom home include exposed beams, an Inglenook fireplace and oak staircase. Alongside the kitchen/breakfast room, drawing room and dining room, great care has been taken to link the original house to a modern glazed garden room complete with stone floors, a wood-burning stove and doors leading directly to the garden.

Outside, the Cotswolds home is situated among landscaped gardens with lawns, mature flowers, trees and shrubs, plus a gazebo and raised courtyard complete with a seating area. As well as the planning permission which has been granted for a gym/studio space, the property also comes with a purpose built garage across the road with its own studio and office area. Located in the village of Upper Tadmarton in Oxfordshire, this quaint cottage sits between Banbury and Chipping Norton, only six miles from the famed Soho Farmhouse.

Yeomans is on the market for £1m. Find out more at knightfrank.co.uk

stone cottage

Stone Cottage

Set within 12 acres of idyllic countryside in West Sussex, this Grade II listed home offers up riverside frontage on the River Arun – perfect for a morning kayak or weekend fish. Another 500-year-old home, Stone Cottage retains many of its characterful period details, including exposed beams, flagstone floors and wood-burning fireplaces nestled under a classic thatched roof. On the ground floor, this historic home offers up a reception room, study nook, cloakroom, dining room, kitchen, and a sitting room with direct access to the garden – as well as a music room with potential to be transformed into a library or studio. Meanwhile, upstairs features three bedrooms, as well as a bathroom and shower room.

A further outbuilding sits outside, complete with an insulated home office, workshop, shed, garage and utility space. On the opposite side of the grounds the estate includes a walled kitchen garden which curves into the formal gardens where mature trees and shrubs encircle a paved seating area, with other features including an ornamental pond, a raised garden with fruit trees and an old well. Complete with a paddock, enclosed field and space for chickens to roam, this is countryside living at its finest.

Stone Cottage is on the market for £1.195m. Find out more at search.savills.com
