'Simply put, it’s freedom'

Four times the size of New York City, three times the size of London – at a little under 1 million acres (916,076 to be precise), this cattle ranch in Wyoming might just be the real life Yellowstone.

What Is Yellowstone?

Set in the neighbouring state of Montana, Yellowstone is a six-season series centred on the Dutton family, the owners of the largest cattle ranch in the state called the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. For those yet to binge the Western drama – with the first four seasons available to watch on Netflix – the plot revolves around the Dutton family and their conflicts with the Broken Rock Indian Reservation next door, the nearby Yellowstone National Park and local land developers.

If you’re already familiar and long to own your very own cattle empire and live like a cowboy in the Rocky Mountains, this may just be the home for you…

Meet The Pathfinder Ranches

On the market for an eye-watering $79.5 million (around £59 million), this property straddles the four neighbouring counties of Natrona, Carbon, Sweetwater and Fremont, and makes up more than 1 percent of the entire Wyoming state. Known collectively as the Pathfinder Ranches, all four properties on the site are currently leased to commercial cattle operations, making Pathfinder one of the largest working ranches in the Rocky Mountains.

Larger than the entire state of Rhode Island, the landscape stretches across the open prairie between the Ferries, Pedro and Green mountain ranges, and surrounds the shimmering waters of Pathfinder Reservoir. With the Sweetwater River winding through the land, the range is encircled by high plains, rolling grasslands, foothills, scenic river valleys and dramatic mountain ranges reminiscent of Brokeback Mountain.

With a legacy stretching back to the 1870s – positively ancient by American standards – the property intersects the Pony Express, Mormon, Californian and Oregon National Historic Trails. It also borders Devil’s Gate, a 370-foot-deep canyon with towering walls, as well as the historic Independence Rock, where people carved their names during the westward expansion in the 19th century.

On top of being a leased cattle and horse enterprise, the ranch also boasts diverse wildlife and is home to the first and largest approved sage-grouse conservation habitat in the country. With restrictions put in place to retain its Old West feel, the property provides access to Wyoming’s unspoiled beauty, with opportunities for hunting, fishing and boating on the land as well.

The Properties

At the heart of the ranch, the 25,000-acre Two Crosses property features the 6,579-square-foot Great Pathfinder Lodge, with nine bedrooms and seven (and a half) bathrooms. Two Crosses also has the 3,556-square-foot Sand Creek Hunting Lodge, which includes six bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. It’s fully equipped for ranch life, with seven employee houses, a riding arena and a church, plus multiple shops and outbuildings.

Meanwhile, the The Beulah Belle Unit, located in Natrona County, includes Oil Can Ranch, Spear Ranch and Cross A Ranch, stretching north through the the Rattlesnake Hills. The Stewart Creek Unit, the largest of the four, includes portions of Sun Ranch, as well as Turkey Track Ranch, Grieve Ranch, Belle Springs, and Arapahoe Creek allotment. The Wooden Rifle Unit is situated along the eastern edges of Pathfinder Reservoir in Natrona and Carbon Counties and includes the Two Iron Ranch.

At Pathfinder, ‘you’re reminded of the grit and determination of the American spirit,’ says Swan Land Company broker Scott Williams. ‘It still lives on here […] You look from one mountain range to the next, and the realization hits you: everything in between is Pathfinder. A vast expanse of grasslands, sagebrush, river corridors, wildlife, and wind. Simply put, it’s freedom.’
