Something to get excited for in January

From Harlan Coben’s Fool Me Once, Missing You and the upcoming Run Away to Scottish noir crime drama Department Q, it is clear Netflix has noticed the value in British mysteries. But for this next watch, the streaming giant is delving into the archives, bringing a lesser known story by Britain’s Queen of Crime to the screen for the first time since 1981.

We are of course talking about Agatha Christie – and the story is The Seven Dials Mystery, first published on 24 January 1929. Flash forward almost a century and a star-studded rendition of the tale is en route, set to premiere in January 2025. Here’s everything we know so far.

Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More

In her first television role since 2022’s Vampire Academy, Mia McKenna-Bruce is set to return to the small screen with two projects in 2026: ITV’s The Lady and Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials for Netflix.

The 2024 BAFTA Rising Star rose to fame on CBBC’s Tracey Beaker Returns, but her turn in 2023’s indie flick How To Have Sex proved her acting chops, and we hope Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials will solidify her role as a British telly mainstay (regardless, you haven’t seen the last of her: she has clinched a role in Sam Mendes’ four-part Beatles biopic).

Directed by Chris Sweeney and working from scripts penned by Chris Chibnall (known for his work on Broadchurch, Torchwood and, of course, Doctor Who), McKenna-Bruce tells Netflix she is ‘thrilled to be part of this new interpretation of the iconic Agatha Christie’s storytelling’.

Taking the leading role of young amateur sleuth Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent in this upcoming Christie mystery, McKenna-Bruce is joined by some British acting heavyweights, from Helena Bonham Carter to Martin Freeman.

What Will Happen?

Agatha Christie is credited with inventing the beloved British country house mystery (and the closed-circle mysteries still thriving across the globe; think Knives Out, The Woman in Cabin 10, even An Inspector Calls), and Seven Dials is a quintessential example.

Opening in England, 1925, the young and fizzingly inquisitive amateur sleuth Lady Eileen Brent (McKenna Bruce), known as Bundle, is faced with a disturbing mystery she is desperate to crack. At a lavish country house party, a practical joke appears to have gone horribly, murderously wrong – and across three episodes Bundle’s investigation will take her from the country to the town, meeting gamblers, cops and even a shot stranger with a secret message.

And yes, the titular Seven Dials is the London area, back then notoriously overcrowded and rife with poverty, as well as being the preferred location for shady wheelings and dealings. Today we know it better as a West End shopping district with the buzzy Seven Dials Market – overcrowded in a different sense. But to replicate the period, filming instead took place in well-preserved Bristol and Bath – with some additional filming in Ronda, Spain.

Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is the first project from The Crown producer Suzanne Mackie’s new production company Orchid Pictures, and she says: ‘It has been a joy to work with Chris Chibnall in creating this bold, authored, and ambitious vision for the series. Together with Chris Sussman [producer] and Agatha Christie Limited and under the masterful direction of Chris Sweeney, we are thrilled to embark on this creative journey. I could not think of a more exciting first project for Orchid Pictures or a more perfect home for this story than Netflix.’
