This buzzy medical drama has arrived on UK screens
If medical dramas are your bag (and you’re not too squeamish), The Pitt is about to become your next TV obsession. The gripping show has developed a cult fanbase in the US since debuting in 2025, scooping up a whole host of awards along the way including Golden Globes, Television Critics Association Awards and Emmys. But now there’s a big buzz about the series this side of the pond too, as it recently became available to stream in the UK through HBO Max.
What Is The Pitt About?
Set in the emergency department of a busy Pittsburgh hospital, The Pitt takes place in real-time across one gruelling 15-hour shift – think 24 meets ER. At the centre is Dr Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch (played by Noah Wyle, also an executive producer), who plays the senior attending physician at The Pitt – his nickname for the under-resourced department where doctors and nurses are pushed to their limits as they deal with the fallout from festival shootings, a measles outbreak, fentanyl overdoses, homelessness and much more.
Dr Robby is a deeply empathetic character, but behind the scenes he’s struggling with PTSD triggered by working through Covid. ‘We’re using Robby as a bit of an avatar for everybody who doesn’t quite recognise themselves or why they’re behaving the way they are,’ Wyle told the BBC.
For British viewers the series offers an eye-opening look into the US healthcare system, where there is no publicly-funded NHS. One storyline, for instance, follows construction worker Orlando Diaz, who is brought into hospital after fainting at work due to the life-threatening condition of diabetic ketoacidosis. It soon transpires that Diaz has been rationing his insulin to make ends meet – and he ends up refusing hospital admission as he already owes $100,000 in medical debt.
‘I can imagine that it would be difficult to get your head around that [if you’re from the UK],’ says Wyle. ‘But I don’t think it’s unrelatable in the sense that, in the winter, Europeans have to make very hard choices about their heating bill versus their food bill… you have to make these choices based on your limited resources and Americans are burdened with an additional item that is health insurance. That makes it very complicated.’
The show has been praised by many real-life medics for its accurate depiction of American hospitals – pre-production, the cast were trained by doctors to ensure procedures and techniques looked as realistic as possible. It’s also filmed in a distinct documentary style: episodes are shot in continuity and all actors must remain on set throughout the day (with a strict no-phone policy to keep everyone immersed in the action).
The Cast
The Pitt is familiar territory for Wyle, who starred as the young Dr John Carter in ER for a whopping 11 seasons. After leaving the show he was determined to leave the world of medical drama behind, but the pandemic changed things. ‘It was during Covid, which was a tricky time for everybody, but first responders in particular were being hit extremely hard,’ Wyle notes.
‘And I was getting a lot of mail from them, sort of chronicling what that experience was like. And I assumed they were reaching out to me because they felt that I had a relevance to their career, having been part of what motivated them to go into that line of work. It didn’t sit well with me that I didn’t have current relevance. I had nothing really to offer back except empathy.’ He got in touch with ER showrunner John Wells and The Pitt evolved from there.
Alongside Wyle, The Pitt stars Tracy Ifeachor (The Vampire Diaries) as Dr Heather Collins, who moved from finance to medicine after the 2008 recession. There’s also Patrick Ball as the charismatic Dr Frank Langdon and Katherine LaNasa as no-nonsense nurse Dana Evans (who won an Emmy for her role in September last year).
Other cast members include:
- Taylor Dearden as Dr Melissa ‘Mel’ King
- Fiona Dourif as Dr Cassie McKay
- Isa Briones as Dr Trinity Santos
- Gerran Howell as Dennis Whitaker
- Shabana Azeez as Victoria Javadi
