See Sue Perkins, Sophie Okonedo and Helena Bonham Carter Perform Poetry
The Power of Poetry

This evening, William Sieghart will discuss his book, Poetry Pharmacy: Tried-and-True Prescriptions for the Heart, Mind and Soul. His poetry collection traces Sieghar’s own personal experience of prescribing real poems to real people in need. He matches each poem to an individual condition, such as fear of the unknown, unrequited love, stagnation, purposelessness, convalescence and oppression. Sue Perkins, Sophie Okonedo and Helena Bonham Carter will bring his poems to life

‘Truly a marvellous collection… There is balm for the soul, fire for the belly, a cooling compress for the fevered brow, solace for the wounded, an arm around the lonely shoulder – the whole collection is a matchless compound of hug, tonic and kiss.’ – Stephen Fry

Jeanette Winterson will join Sieghart in conversation. The two will discuss poetry as a mollifying and connective power. Winterson explains that finding the right poem at the right moment is ‘to discover a powerful sense of complicity, and that precious realisation: I’m not the only one who feels like this.’ It is to forge a connection with ‘this stranger who understands – and what results is a sort of peace.’

7pm at the Emmanuel Centre, 9-23 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 3DW. Tickets from £25 for students and £40 for standard admission, bookable at Intelligence Squared.
