There’s a Yellowstone shaped hole in our hearts, and there’s still a little while until it will be filled. Here’s everything we know so far about what’s to come, including when the second part of season 5 will debut, plus whether a Yellowstone season 6 is on the cards.

Will There Be A Yellowstone Season 6?

No, there will not be a sixth season of Yellowstone. In May 2023, it was announced that Yellowstone season five would be the final instalment of the popular western series. However, at the same time, producers announced that work was beginning on a sequel series called 2024, with Matthew McConaughey slated to star.

When Will Part 2 Of Season 5 Air?

Part 2 of Yellowstone Season 5 will kick off on 10 November 2024 on Paramount, two years after the first part of the season aired. (At this point, shouldn’t we suck it up and call it Yellowstone season 6?).

Part 2 will consist of six episodes and bring the series to a close, bringing the season’s grand total of episodes to 14.

What Will Happen?

Part 1 of Yellowstone season 5 left us with a huge cliffhanger. John Dutton won the election for governor of Montana and fired almost everyone, hiring Beth as his new chief of staff. But Jamie has his eye on his father’s governorship and it seems he will do anything to get it – perhaps even murder.

What Will Happen To Josh Dutton III?

Interestingly, part two of Yellowstone season 5 won’t feature our protagonist Josh Dutton III after the departure of actor Kevin Costner, who wanted to focus on his own western project. This project – a four-part film called Horizon – was at the centre of a feud between Costner and series creator Taylor Sheridan, with each blaming each other for the part two delay, eventually pushing Costner to pull out of Yellowstone entirely.

So how will this be written into the series? It remains to be seen. One thing we do know, however, is that Costner allegedly has a ‘moral death’ clause written into his contract, which basically means he gets final say on how the Dutton patriarch dies. At first, this was added to prevent Costner being cut out of the series, which almost happened at the end of season 3. But, of course, that is no longer the case – so it’s unclear whether Costner will have exercised his right.

The Yellowstone Universe

As mentioned above, a Yellowstone sequel is in the works – but that’s not the only spin-off in Taylor Sheridan and John Linson’s huge Yellowstone universe. Here are all of the moving parts and the timelines they cover.

Yellowstone: Follows the Dutton family from 2018 to 2023 across five seasons.
1883: A prequel to Yellowstone which follows the post-Civil war generation of the Dutton family in 1883; ran for only one season.
1923: A sequel to 1923 and prequel to 1883 which follows a generation of the Dutton family in 1923, with two seasons (one yet to air).
2024: A sequel to Yellowstone, picking up where the former ends and potentially starring Matthew McConaughey. In the works.
6666: A present day spin-off from Yellowstone set on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. In the works.
1944: Another proposed prequel to Yellowstone, which will follow 1923. In the works.
