Lainston House is running a series of star-studded masterclasses

Counting down the days until Bake Off returns to our screens? We’ve got some other exciting news for you: previous winner Matty Edgell is hosting a series of masterclasses this autumn/winter. Better still, he’ll be joining forces with another TV star, Tom Hamblet from MasterChef: The Professionals, to host the workshops.
Matty Edgell & Tom Hamblet At Lainston House
Taking place at Lainston House’s Season Cookery School in Hampshire, there will be four dates available to book across October and November. These will allow budding chefs and bakers – as well as fans of the two TV shows – to cook alongside Matty and Tom.
First up on 10 and 24 October, the duo will guide participants through a two-course menu. After kicking off the day with a pastry and a coffee, you’ll learn how to cook up a beef fillet with Roscoff onion and grey oyster mushroom, led by Tom. Next, Matty will guide students through creating a vanilla Basque with crumble topping and blackberry compote.
You’ll then have the chance to chat to Matty and Tom about their experience of featuring on Bake Off and MasterChef: The Professionals, before sitting down to enjoy your dishes.
In the two later classes on 7 and 21 November, Matty will teach the art of crafting the perfect afternoon tea. During an interactive cookery session, you’ll prepare sausage rolls, a caramel chocolate tart and a Paris Brest filled with hazelnut praline. Will you be named star baker?
After both sessions, guests will be given a Season Cookery School apron and a signed recipe pack to take with them, so they can recreate the dishes at home.

Matty was the winner of Great British Bake Off in 2023. The former PE and science teacher from Cambridgeshire learnt to bake from a young age, inspired by his grandma’s creations. He defeated his fellow finalists Josh Smalley and Dan Hunter, impressing judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in the choux pastry signature bake challenge.
After his win, Matty said: ‘People said I should go on Bake Off and I never really listened to it. I never thought I’d get on it, let alone win it!’ He added: ‘There’s been so many ups, there’s been so many downs. There’s been so many times when I’ve had to be pulled through it by the people around me… It still doesn’t feel real.’
In that same year, Tom was named winner of MasterChef: The Professionals, a MasterChef spinoff which sees talented chefs from across the UK battling it out in the ultimate culinary competition. Born in Horsham, Tom worked at Michelin-starred restaurants including The Latymer at Pennyhill Park before joining the team at South Lodge Hotel, where both his parents also worked as chefs.
After scoring gold on MasterChef: The Professionals, Tom got a new role as head chef of Lainston House hotel’s flagship restaurant The Avenue – aged just 25 – where he has worked ever since. It serves a number of tasting menus designed to celebrate seasonality, spotlighting fresh produce from the hotel’s own kitchen garden. Right now, you’ll be treated to dishes like scallop with anchovy and seaweed pickle, venison loin with beetroot, and whipped cheesecake tart with pear and fig leaf.
Season Cookery School is set within the grounds of the five-star hotel, offering an array of classes – from Indian street food to barbecuing to knife skills. Lainston House also runs cook and stay packages, where you can brush up on your culinary skills before enjoying a night in one of the rooms or suites.
