Level up your Italian bob with this Riviera special

Picture this: a hazy afternoon with the sun lapping against your skin, you can see the ocean glinting in the distance, and the Aperol Spritz in your hand is cold and crisp. It’s an idyllic summer scene – and one that isn’t too far away. But what if we told you there was a haircut that could match this energy? Get to know the Riviera bob, the cut of the summer.

What Is A Riviera Bob?

The sister haircut to the Italian bob – aka, the go-to short hairstyle of last summer – the Riviera bob plays with the same volume and distinct curved shape, but adds some extra lift and fluff to make it appear chicly ruffled. ‘It’s effortless,’ adds Cos Sakkas, TONI&GUY Global Creative Director. ‘It instantly makes you think of warm days in the Mediterranean sunshine.

‘The Riviera bob embraces natural texture and a lived-in finish, sitting on the shoulders with volume adding to the overall shape. This bob celebrates shattered outlines and windswept movement – and the addition of a soft fringe help give it a softly tousled look. It’s easy to style, easy to maintain and is the perfect evolution to last year’s textured bob.’

Who Suits This Cut?

‘Anyone can wear this bob,’ confirms Cos, ‘but it’s perfect for those with straight to wavy hair. The haircut will add life to finer hair, as it has volume throughout without being overly styled. Thicker hair, meanwhile, can be textured for that softer feel. As we head into the summer months, it’s effortless but high impact on style. The key is keeping it relaxed, soft and undone.’

How To Ask For A Riviera Bob In The Salon

During your salon consultation, mention to your stylist that you want a bob with volume and movement. You can reference the Italian bob as a starting point, then place emphasis on loose styling for the Riviera look. If in doubt, have inspiration images from Instagram and Pinterest (or even videos from TikTok) ready to show your stylist.

How To Style A Riviera Bob

Less is more with this cut. ‘The key is not to over style,’ agrees Cos. ‘Air dry or diffuse to encourage your natural texture. Apply a lightweight mousse that will hold the style without it looking or feeling “done”.

‘Loose waves are the perfect texture for the Riviera bob,’ he adds. ‘To get the look, apply a heat protection and, using irons, gently bend the hair. A light texturising spray will help give volume through the roots while adding texture and hold for that undone finish.’

What Next?

‘The bob is timeless, it’s the details that make it on trend and modern,’ Cos explains. He sees the bob continuing to adapt and evolve over time, with the Riviera bob just an example of how we continue to modernise the classic cut. ‘Hair is like a pair of clothing – for example, a trouser is a trouser, but it’s the small details, such as the shape of the pockets or pleats, that make it on trend for that season. It’s the same with the bob; the foundations are the same, it’s how the parting, texture or length is worn that makes it current for that season.’
