Loretto’s Pipe Band Performs at Lord’s
A pipe dream for some, a reality for Loretto School!

The Loretto School pipe band and Highland dancers added a splash of tartan and a distinctly Scottish flavour to the 1st Test Match at Lord’s.
On the third day of play between England and South Africa on Saturday 8 July, pupils played in front of a capacity crowd of 30,000.
The pipers, drummers and dancers provided the lunch entertainment by performing on the hallowed turf at Lord’s. Billed and introduced as the ‘world-famous Loretto School pipe band and highland dancers’, the pupils wowed the crowd by performing for half an hour.
It is the latest in a string of accolades for the pipe band, which has previously performed at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle and Hampden Park. They have even played with Sir Paul McCartney at the Liverpool Echo Arena and and for the Pope. The band has been part of life at Loretto for over 100 years, and today is often accompanied by the school’s troupe of highland dancers. Children interested in the pipe band start to learn the chanter or drums in the junior school, and have an opportunity to join the pipe band when they graduate to the senior school aged 12.
Loretto School’s director of communications, Jonathan Hewat said: ‘Having been so impressed with the Loretto Pipe Band playing at other recent high-profile events, we were honoured and delighted that they were chosen to play at Lord’s. This was another fabulous opportunity for the Loretto boys and girls.’
