Hockey talent gets England call-up as school celebrates record season

Reigate Grammar School is celebrating more national honours for its players as Steph Weber sets off to the Netherlands with the England hockey under-16 squad.

Fifteen-year-old Steph is excited to represent her country following an Easter call-up to the U16 squad. She joins a host of RGS girls selected for national teams.
Hockey talent runs in the Weber family. Steph’s twin sister, Taylor, who also attends Reigate Grammar School, was a member of England Hockey’s Saxon Tigers team playing in the England Futures Cup.
In addition to the Weber girls’ placements, 15-year-old Amy Wickham has been selected to play for her region’s Saxon Tigers squad. She also attended the U5 High Performance Assessment Camp where the top 72 girls play in tournaments against each region to an audience of England squad assessors.

All three girls have taken inspiration from Reigate alumna Harriett Mitchell, who was a member of the England U21 team in the recent Junior Women’s World Cup in Chile. Her team beat Chile and the USA, drew against South Africa and Australia, before finally losing to Spain and Germany. The England women finished at number seven in the world rankings.
The school’s head of hockey, Becks Wickham, said: ‘It’s been a hugely successful season for the girls at RGS – full of amazing achievements. Our girls brought home a record number of medals this year with two teams being crowned Surrey Champions, and four teams reaching the South Finals of the National Competition.
She added: ‘We are so proud of all the girls’ achievements and now to see Steph off to Holland to represent England is a just reward for all her hard work – we wish her all the best as she continues to perform on the International stage.’
