Laura Wade’s interpretation of the classic text by Lewis Carroll took the audience down a rabbit hole of a different kind. The play opens at a funeral where uncaring relatives and busy, hurt parents are ignoring Alice and haven’t been able to find a way for her to share her grief. The audience follow her on a journey of self-discovery down her own personal rabbit hole, meeting all the classic, wacky characters that are part of this much-loved story who help her come to terms with tragedy.

Mr Ed Taylor-Gooby, Head of Drama, said: ‘As ever, the main production of our theatre season includes actors and a backstage team from Year 7 to Upper Sixth. It’s a community effort and an inclusive experience for everybody involved. A huge amount of hard work and rehearsal time has gone into producing the show and it’s been a creative and fulfilling experience for everyone. Head of Music, Mr Conley-Harper, and I decided to take interpretation of the text a stage further by setting it in a jazz club; we have taken music from some of our favourite contemporary artists and joined these with a selection of original compositions written specifically for the show. All have been weaved into a reimagined jazz context that underscores the mood and atmosphere of the play.’

The fantastic production was a sell out success and a reflection of the commitment to the performing arts at The Royal.
