She married Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer at a grand ceremony in Liechtenstein

Congratulations are in order for Princess Marie Caroline of Liechtenstein and Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer. The couple tied the knot over the weekend (30 August 2025) in the royal’s home country of Liechtenstein, in a private ceremony attended by friends and family. For her ensemble, the bride opted for the perfect mix of contemporary design and tradition – as well as a tiara that has been handed down the Liechtenstein family for well over a century. Below, we look back on Princess Marie Caroline’s wedding day (and her stunning bridal ensemble).

A Closer Look At Princess Marie Caroline’s Wedding Day

Liechtenstein might be small – the German-speaking principality has a population of just over 40,000 – but the celebrations for Princess Marie Caroline and her husband were mighty. The royal married her long-time partner, Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer, in a church wedding at the Cathedral of Vaduz in the country’s capital.

The cathedral, which had been decorated with a garden of blue and white flowers and a long blue carpet, looked every bit the lavish royal wedding venue. And with the occasion marking the first wedding of a sovereign princess since 1999, when Princess Tatjana and Philipp von Lattorf tied the knot, it was a big occasion for the entire royal family.

Those in attendance included the bride’s parents, Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie, her three brothers, Prince Joseph Wenzel, Prince Georg Antonius, and Prince Nikolaus Sebastian, and her grandfather, Prince Hans-Adam II. They were joined by a number of other royal family members, like Princess Maria Anunciata, Princess Marie-Astrid (whose three-year-old daughter, Althaea, was a flower girl) and Prince Josef-Emmanuel, alongside the aforementioned Princess Tatjana, her husband and their children.

Princess Marie Caroline is the second child – and the only daughter – of Hereditary Prince Alois, the heir apparent to the Liechtenstein throne. She was born in her home country in 1996, but relocated to the UK for her studies, where she completed her studies and likely met her now-husband.

A Caracas-born investment manager, Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer also studied Britain, going to school at Harrow and later completing his undergraduate at St Andrew as well as postgraduate degree at Cambridge.

The two are now based in the UK capital, but chose to return to Liechtenstein for their wedding celebrations.

The royal couple announced their engagement back in October 2024, with the Liechtenstein royal household releasing an official press release to mark the occasion. The official statement read: ‘H.S.H. the Hereditary Prince and H.R.H. The Hereditary Princess von und zu Liechtenstein are delighted to announce the engagement of their daughter, Princess Marie Caroline, to Mr Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer.’

What Did Princess Marie Caroline’s Wedding Dress Look Like?

Princess Marie Caroline opted for a chic A-line gown for her wedding ceremony, with a bold design made from several layers of lace. Starting with a sheer, dotted panel at her neckline, it flared out into ‘stripes’ of contrasting embroidered lace. The bride’s arms were also partially covered with partial circular cup sleeves made from tulle, which ended at her elbows.

She accessorised with an heirloom tiara and earrings, as well as a dramatic, royal length veil decorated with crystals and featuring an ornate lace trim. It was held in place atop her blonde locks, which the princess had styled in a regal chignon for her big day.

Why Is Everyone Talking About Her Tiara?

While it’s certainly not strange to see a royal bride don a tiara for her big day, the significance of the headpiece worn on this occasion has the internet talking. Princess Marie Caroline wore the Habsburg Fringe Tiara, a family diadem that dates back to the 1890s. It was made by Köchert, one of the oldest jewellers in Austria and the imperial court jeweller of the Habsburgs – and features a fringe design made from silver and gold set diamonds, inspired by the Kokoshniks of the Russian Royal Court.

The tiara was made for Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, and her daughter Archduchess Elizabeth brought it to the Liechtenstein family when she married Prince Alois of Liechtenstein in 1903. Since then, it’s been worn by several members of the royal family.

This includes Princess Marie Caroline’s late grandmother, Countess Marie Kinsky, who famously wore the tiara for her wedding to Prince Hans Adam in 1967. (The princess also gave a nod to grandmother with her choice of earrings, a diamond pair that were reportedly a favourite of the Countess’ until her death in 2021.) Her second cousin, Princess Maria Anunciata of Liechtenstein, similarly donned the headpiece for her nuptials to Emanuele Musini in 2021.

Her mother, Hereditary Princess Sophie, is also known for wearing the Habsburg Fringe Tiara for various royal events – including the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in 2010 and Queen Beatrix’s Abdication Dinner in 2013.

So it’s safe to say that, while a family heirloom, the Habsburg Fringe Tiara also held plenty of sentimental value for Princess Marie Caroline as she walked down the aisle.
