Here's how to see it
What does British summer mean to you? Perhaps it’s strawberries and cream, picky-bit picnics and the scent of sunscreen – floral dresses, floppy hats or even the social, ahem, sports season. Whatever it is, at C&TH, summer kicks off with the annual Chelsea Flower Show, which attracts everyone from gardening aficionados to green thumbed royals like pollen-drunk bees to a honeypot. This year, the same was true for Chelsea Flower Show’s long-time partner, award-winning luxury estate, The Newt in Somerset, which unveiled a new collaboration with beloved British brand Burberry to capture their shared love of the countryside and the very essence of a great British summer. Here’s what you need to know.
Burberry x The Newt: A British Summer Delight
For decades, Burberry has found inspiration in the outdoors – and no British hotel champions the great British outdoors quite like The Newt in Somerset. Boasting 42 individually designed rooms, this is a 2,000 acre working farm, with both formal and productive gardens, ancient woodlands and apple orchards scattered throughout. This is all alongside the amenities a luxury traveller has come to expect, including an indulgent spa with a menu of botanical treatments, world-class garden-to-table restaurants and a calendar of intriguing talks, workshops and events.
When it first opened in 2019, Sandy Carr wrote there was ‘an infectious air of experimentation about the place, an exploration of limitless possibilities for future projects’. She hit the nail on the head: flash forward six years, and The Newt is bigger, better and more highly regarded than ever thanks to conservation initiatives, agenda-setting talks, attention to detail and a genuine care for the local area – all blended with the creme de la creme of guest experience. When we asked our top travel writers for their British hotel recommendations for Great British & Irish Hotels 2025/26, Luke Abrahams described The Newt as ‘one of those rare beasts that really embraces their locale, from pagan customs to the people who work there’.
‘They genuinely care about where they are, their effect on their patch and boosting the local economy,’ Luke added. ‘I think that’s the best kind of detail you can get.’
Burberry’s summer takeover of The Newt blends British craftsmanship, style and history with a deep-rooted love of the countryside. Think bespoke guest experiences like golf buggy tours and hot-air balloons, all drenched in a custom Burberry check drawing on the signature green of the estate.
