The jet-setter's alternative to holiday sales
Black Friday spells bad news: 2023’s sales produced 429,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from product deliveries in the UK, with shoppers spending around £3 billion in Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales (a drop from £4.8 billion in 2021, at least). On average, around 80 percent of products bought during this period end up in landfill shortly after – so we observe Green Friday instead. That said, another seasonal deal from across the Atlantic has caught our eye: Travel Tuesday. Here’s what it is – plus some deals to make the most of.

Travel Tuesday is a new(er) pre-Christmas sales online shoppers can enjoy. Black Friday (the final Friday of November) and Cyber Monday (the Monday after Black Friday when sales continue online) are the main events, but on Travel Tuesday (the day after Cyber Monday) the sales transfer to the tourism industry, with lucrative deals available on flights, hotel stays, car hire and more.
This year, Travel Tuesday will fall on Tuesday 2 December.
We all know Black Friday has seeped out of the boundaries of Friday, but it has also escaped the retail bubble: prices are slashed across a broad spectrum of industries, from travel agents to shoe shops, even to opticians and dentists. Great deals on travel certainly pop-up in line with Travel Tuesday, but most usually commence before Tuesday and some even end before Travel Tuesday since it’s still quite an unknown event here in the UK.
Big travel brands like Ryanair, Virgin Holidays, Heidi Ski Holidays and Booking.com usually take part. Luxury lovers should keep an eye on Mr & Mrs Smith which is offering up to 45 percent off boutique hotel stays this year, while Intrepid Travel is offering up to 20 percent off its small group tour bookings and slow travel experts Byway are offering free first class upgrades on their train trips.
If you’d like to get ahead of the deals, here are some tips:
The best way to enjoy Travel Tuesday? Book yourself into a beautiful British hotel: staycations are the perfect antidote to the busy festive season. Or why not buy a voucher for a loved one to open come Christmas? Here are some deals to keep your eye on.
