Putting sustainability at the forefront of the fashion agenda

The fifth edition of Sustainable Fashion Week kicks off this September. A fringe event separate from the British Fashion Council’s London Fashion Week schedule, the goal here is to put the focus back on planet-positive fashion – and give communities all over the UK the tools and they need to make a difference at home. So, what can we expect? Here’s everything you need to know about Sustainable Fashion Week 2025.

Sustainable Fashion Week 2025: Everything You Need To Know

What Is It?

If we want to reach the vital Net Zero target by 2050, the goal set out by the Paris Climate Agreement to prevent irreversible climate disaster, our relationship with clothes – and in particular fast fashion – has got to change, and quickly.

This is the thinking behind Sustainable Fashion Week, an event that will be held in the UK this September with the aim of changing the narrative of sustainable fashion to one of positivity, gain and accessibility for all. There will also be mini events in pop-up locations around Britain, with the aim of bringing communities together in collective action.

‘Sustainable Fashion Week is, at its core, about bringing people together to support and inspire each other,’ explained founder Amelia Twine, when Sustainable Fashion Week launched its first show in 2021. ‘The industry needs to change dramatically and we want to celebrate the brilliant work already being done by so many people, and to activate more of the community to take a stand for fashion that is sustainable, equitable and representative.’

What Happens At Sustainable Fashion Week?

The focus of Sustainable Fashion Week will not be on next season’s trends but instead on community action and equipping people with the skills and information they need to make positive changes in favour of more planet-friendly fashion. The week will support a step change in making sustainable fashion accessible and inclusive – using the overarching themes of Regenerate, Rewear, Repurpose and Reconnect.

As one of the world’s worst polluters and carbon producers, the fashion industry has a large part to play in the Race To Zero. In 2018, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recommended that carbon emissions need to be cut by at least 45 percent by 2030 in order for the world to reach its Net Zero goal. Events like Sustainable Fashion Week have a key part to play in this, from raising awareness of the crisis to offering more eco-friendly alternatives for fashion fans.

Hosted in various venues across the UK, Sustainable Fashion Week will consist of a range of community-led events, workshops, markets, debates and film screenings – all designed with the goal to promote sustainable fashion practices and challenge the fast fashion system. ‘Learn skills, get info, meet like-minded people who give a damn,’ highlights the organisation’s website. ‘SFW 2025 is packed full of ways to get stuck in and get resourced to change our fashion habits collectively.’

And Sustainable Fashion Week’s 2025 theme promotes this message more than ever: ‘Our theme for 2025 invites you to take the power back. Reclaim fashion through reclaiming your style, your connection to your clothing, your skills, your community, your love of colour, the magic of secondhand, the love of visible repair and the secrets of invisible repair.’

When Is It?

The event runs every September around the same time as London Fashion Week. This year, Sustainable Fashion Week takes place between 27 September and 5 October 2025.

Where Is It?

Unlike city-specific Fashion Weeks, Sustainable Fashion Week takes place all over the UK – with events and workshops running via Hubs and Fringe spaces in Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, London, Newcastle and more. (The flagship Hub this year can be found in Somer.) ‘Hubs are larger, powerful and immersive hives of activity,’ explains the website. ‘Fringe events are one off, smaller but equally empowering workshops and events.’

You can find the full list of Hubs and Fringe events here.
