Triumph in the International Baccalaureate

Pupils at Cheltenham Ladies’ College have outdone themselves with a point average of 42.7 in their IB results.

Over 5,000 schools worldwide offer the IB programme, which focusses on academic rigour and students’ personal development. CLC students gained marks significantly higher than this year’s global average of 33.2 points.

Principal Eve Jardine-Young said: ‘In yet another difficult year for the country’s Sixth Formers, I continue to be inspired by the resilience, focus and dedication our pupils have shown.’

Felsted School also saw some spectacular scores with 39 pupils passing their IB Diploma Programme. Felsted has been running the IB for 13 years and sees the benefits increase year on year.

Headmaster, Chris Townsend comments: ‘once more, this year has been disrupted by factors beyond their control, but all of our students can be incredibly proud of the hard work that they have put in over the last two years to achieve this exceptional qualification.  We wish them every success as they move on from Felsted to further education, and fully expect them to continue to flourish.’

Haileybury School in Hertfordshire brought home an impressive average point score of 39, placing them well above the national average. Three students achieved top marks with many others achieving 44 and 43 points.

Martin Collier, The Master at Haileybury, said, ‘these are an outstanding set of IBDP results. Given the circumstances of the last 16 months, all of the pupils deserve credit for their efforts. To complete Individual Assignments to such a high standard in a period that included two lockdowns is quite extraordinary.

‘The statistics confirm that Haileybury is one of the very best IBDP schools in the UK. Above all else, we are delighted that the hard work and dedication of our IBDP pupils has paid off. We are very proud of them and grateful to their teachers who have served them so very well.’

Stonyhurst College in Lancashire also achieved a 100% pass rate with 71% of pupils achieving 36 points or more with one third gaining more than 40 placing them in the top 4% of candidates worldwide.

John Browne, Headmaster at Stonyhurst, said, ’the International Baccalaureate Programme at Stonyhurst continues to flourish. The Jesuit concept of having ‘one foot in the air’, ready for the next challenge, has perhaps never been more relevant, and the way that our young people have energised themselves during this challenging year has been inspirational.

Pupils at Taunton School, Somerset, achieved a 100% pass rate and the school’s best-ever average scores. Out of a possible 45 points, Head Boy Daniel Travers received outstanding full marks with the others in hot pursuit.

The IB Diploma has been established for over 50 years with Taunton School being one of the first in the south-west to set up their IB programme in 2007.

IB Coordinator Adrian Roberts, says: ‘I’m absolutely thrilled that after 14 years, our excellent results continue and that once again our students have achieved outstanding scores.’

He added, ‘this is a demanding course and I am incredibly proud of all our students who have worked so hard and faced the challenges of this difficult year with such resilience.’
