Last week the 2026 Oscar nominations were revealed, but this week we’re back on home turf celebrating the return of the BAFTA Film Awards. These are the most prestigious film awards in the UK, and while they are international in scope, there are plenty of categories that seek to reward British talent in particular.
And the 2026 nominees are finally here, announced at midday today (27 Jan) by Aimee Lou Wood and 2025’s EE Rising Star David Jonsson from BAFTA’s London HQ. The Headlines
A total of 46 films are nominated at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards, which BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip describes as ‘[showcasing] the very best of storytelling and its ability to engage, entertain and provoke debate’.
While Sinners dominates the Oscars shortlist, it’s Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another leading the pack here with 14 nods. Ryan Coogler’s historical horror Sinners is next with 13 nominations – the highest for a Black director in BAFTA history, including Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku.
Both films find themselves in the competitive Best Film category, against Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, Norwegian flick Sentimental Value and heart-rending Hamnet. The latter is the most-nominated British film this year with 11 commendations.

‘This year’s nominated films are full of bold storytelling and exquisite craft,’ Jane adds. ‘And the breadth of narrative, genres and styles is spellbinding. Whether newcomers or veterans, I hope our first-time nominees enjoy this much deserved spotlight, and I look forward to welcoming them and all our returning nominees to London.’
Hamnet is tied with Marty Supreme on nominations, with both leading men, Paul Mescal and Timotheé Chalamet, up for acting awards – the latter for the second year running. Hamnet‘s Jessie Buckley – BAFTA Breakthrough alum – is also up for Best Leading Actress, while co-star Emily Watson has bagged a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Elsewhere, British indie titles I Swear, Pillion and The Ballad of Wallis Island thrive on a more local stage, the former bagging five nominations and the latter two getting three.
If you would like more of an insight into the judging and voting process, we have a nitty gritty guide to the BAFTA Film Awards here.
