The rumour mill is spinning…

It’s officially November, which means the countdown to Christmas is firmly on and a slew of Christmas films and TV series are landing (or resurfacing) on streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+. The latter is subject to some intriguing rumours right now, all thanks to a rogue Facebook revitalising rumours that the story of Kevin McCallister and Home Alone is not over after all.

So is Cabin Alone actually happening? And will Macaulay Culkin star? Here’s what we know.

Is The Macaulay Culkin Cabin Alone Movie Actually Happening?

There’s no official news from Disney on whether Macaulay Culkin and Catherine O’Hara will reunite for Cabin Alone, a rumoured sequel set in the present day world of Home Alone (1990), with Kevin now a grown-up.

Directed by Brat Pack custodian John Hughes, the original film introduced us to Kevin McCallister (Culkin), the youngest of five children who is accidentally left behind by his hustling-bustling family who are spending Christmas in Paris. Alone over the festive season, Kevin must put his wits to use defending his suburban Chicago home from opportunistic robbers.

In 1992, a sequel, Home Alone: Lost in New York, reunited us with the chaotic McCallisters, while Home Alone 3 (1997) and Home Alone 4 (2002), Home Alone: The Holiday Heist (2012) and Home Sweet Home Alone (2021) all star a new cast and characters. But the first film and its sequel shot Culkin to instant fame, and he is considered one of the most successful child actors of the 1990s as a result.

So is Culkin set to return to the Home Alone universe 34 years after the original film landed in cinemas? Cabin Alone is a rumoured sequel starring Caulkin and his on-screen mother Catherine O’Hara. It’s Christmas, and Kevin and his mom Kate arrive early at their remote cabin where the whole family will be spending Christmas – only to learn the rest of the family’s flights are delayed. Marv (Joe Pesci) and Harry (Daniel Stern) target the cabin, and Kevin and Kate join forces to defend it in the ultimate showdown. ‘With snow-covered traps, outrageous pranks, and high-stakes holiday antics, they turn the quiet cabin into a thrilling battleground that’ll have you laughing and cheering. Get ready for a wild holiday adventure with Cabin Alone, streaming on Disney+ this December!’

So is that a synopsis from Disney itself? No, no: the Cabin Alone rumour stems from a Facebook post by YODA BBY ABY, a page self-described as ‘100% satire and fake news’. The post, accompanied by a digitally edited image overlaying Caulkin and O’Hara on a festive backdrop, was published three days ago and has garnered more than 130,000 likes and 31,000 shares – so it’s gone pretty viral.

This time last year, another Home Alone sequel was rumoured – Home Alone: Kevin’s Revenge – with a fan-made spoof trailer racking up more than 6 million views, so this isn’t anything new. In fact, it perhaps speaks to a demand from fans of the franchise. While Cabin Alone is definitely not happening – especially not in December 2024, if this spoof gives Disney ideas, we won’t be complaining…

What Is The Home Alone Tour?

He may not have shot a new film, but Macaulay Culkin is far from shaking off his Kevin McCallister identity. This December, he is going on a Home Alone Tour across the US, inviting fans to watch a special screening of Home Alone followed by a Q&A with Culkin himself. Dates span 30 November to 15 December and can be booked at homealonetour.com
