Soak up river views from a floating wood-fired sauna

Saunas are popping up all over the capital, but the latest launch brings something new to the experience. A Scandinavian-inspired sauna boat has arrived in Canary Wharf, offering Londoners the chance to tap into the buzzy wellness trend while docked on the River Thames.

A Sauna Boat Is Coming To London

Created by Skuna Boats, the 15-person vessel includes both a wood-fired sauna and a cold plunge pool, allowing full hot and cold therapy. Launching on 26 April 2025 (which happens to be World Sauna Day), the boat is taking up residence at the Skuna Boats HQ in East London, with plans to roll out more sauna boats across the country.

‘We hope the UK’s first sauna boat captures the nation’s attention,’ says founder of Skuna Boats, Stuart Tommo Thomson. ‘Our vision is not only to bring the powerful health and wellness benefits of saunas and cold plunges to London, but also to embrace the sauna’s Scandinavian roots – where the social aspect plays a central role. Expect an incredible, authentic Scandinavian Sauna experience, complete with DJ curated music – all whilst taking in the views of iconic and historic Canary Wharf.’

Thought to have originated in Finland, saunas have been around for thousands of years, initially used for warmth during the winter. They’ve long been a regular fixture in spas, too, but interest has soared in the UK recently, with an influx of community saunas popping up in cities and wild saunas arriving in coastal areas. There are numerous wellness benefits to saunas, including stress reduction and improved blood circulation, but fans are also drawn to the social element.

Founded in 2017 and based in Canary Wharf, Skuna Boats is a marine company known for its water-based social experiences. Its repertoire includes everything from floating igloo fondue boats to hot tub boats and even boat cinemas.
