Come along, old sport: we’ve got a show to catch

The Great Gatsby is in full swing at the London Coliseum, beckoning fresh audiences into the glamorous world F Scott Fitzgerald first conjured exactly a century ago. Starring Jamie Muscato in the title role, this Tony Award-winning musical adaptation was created by Jason Howland, Nathan Tysen and Kait Kerrigan and first performed in New Jersey in 2023, and has finally crossed the Atlantic for a summer of gilded parties.

Once the spellbinding music and magic have all faded into the night, you’ll be needing somewhere to rest your head. And come to think of it, you may well be looking for somewhere to fuel up beforehand. That’s where L’oscar London comes in, Bloomsbury’s grand hotel blending its historic exterior with resplendent interiors. Here’s what you need to know about the hotel’s Gatsby-themed escape.

The Gatsby Musical

The Gatsby Escape At L’oscar London

The Great Gatsby may be a century old as of 2025, but it’s a story that endures: Jay Gatsby (Jamie Muscato) yearns for his former flame Daisy Buchanan (Frances Mayli McCann) – but she comes from a different universe. And while his glitzy parties are impressive, Gatsby will never possess the deftness of the old money world, Daisy’s world.

Starring Corbin Bleu as Nick Carraway and Amber Davies as Jordan Baker, this all plays out across a series of parties and mystical social occasions, created on stage in this new musical production with all the verve and sparkly spectacle you could desire.

And you’ll be needing a suitably alluring place to stay – that’s where L’oscar London comes in. This a Grade II* listed Bloomsbury hotel transforms The Great Gatsby from musical to immersive experience, continuing the opulence and mystery of the jazz age long after the curtain has fallen.

Step inside the Baroque-style building to experience an immediate sense of occasion; darkly romantic interiors with touches of flamboyance offer an indulgently immersive escape into the 1920s. Rooms are so splendidly furnished you’ll feel like you’ve fallen from the between the pages of one of Fitzgerald’s famed novels. Enjoy your themed goodies while you slip into something glam ready for an evening of pizzazz.

Two diners with plates and glasses

An Evening at Gatsby’s

Downstairs, begin with L’oscar’s special pre-theatre menu (also available without the night’s stay), playfully named ‘An Evening at Gatsby’s’. Expect three courses inspired by the jazz age but utilising seasonal British ingredients, with playful nods to the show ahead (the Old Sport cocktail makes a fitting toast to the evening ahead).

Then it’s just a short walk to the London Coliseum, where your signed programme will give you the perfect introduction to the roaring twenties extravaganza about to unfold. With its themes of technology and newness, there’s no better place to stage a Gatsby musical than this magnificent theatre – London’s largest, seating 2,359 guests. Just 21 years older than Gatsby (first opening in 1904), the London Coliseum was a marvel of its age: one of the few European theatres with an elevator, and England’s first theatre with a triple revolve on the stage.

As you settle in for the show critics have described as a ‘feat of spectacle and seduction‘ and ‘truly dazzling‘, gawp at the grandiose Coliseum  auditorium, brimming with classical details and mouldings as well as the eye-catching dome. Home to the English National Opera, The Great Gatsby Musical will call the London Coliseum home until 7 September.

And once the curtain has dropped and you’ve given your standing ovation, it’s another short walk back to your home-from-home, where you can debrief the action over a nightcap or slip straight into your cloud-soft bed, mind whirling with the magic of the music.
