A Guide To Gordon Ramsay’s TV Shows

Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares

Pulling a struggling restaurant out of the depths of crisis is no mean feat – but if anyone can help, it’s Ramsay. This is the premise of one of his best-loved shows, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, which first arrived on Channel 4 in 2004.

The programme sees Ramsay attempting to transform restaurants on the brink of closure with his characteristically frank advice, from a curry house in Nottingham to a carvery in Sussex and a fine dining restaurant in Inverness. It ran for five seasons in the UK, and sparked a US version, which continued even longer with nine seasons – all of which you can stream now on Channel 4.

Gordon Behind Bars

Back in 2012, Ramsay took on an unexpected challenge. The celebrity chef spent six months in HMP Brixton prison – not on a custodial sentence, but a mission to teach a group of inmates how to cook and set up their own bakery. A group of 12 prisoners are selected to launch the self-named Bad Boys’ Bakery, in a bid to give them employable skills they can take into the world when released. Inevitably, the setting of the show creates new challenges and tensions – knives and peelers have to be signed for, fights break out, Ramsay’s wife suggests he takes self-defence classes – but there are uplifting moments too. ‘I think it made a massive difference,’ said Ramsay, reflecting on the experience. ‘Some of them had tears in their eyes when they got their certificates at the end, and they were saying “Is this going to continue?”’

The F Word

Another of Ramsay’s early TV hits was The F Word, first aired on Channel 4 in 2005. Like many of Ramsay’s shows, it’s centred around a culinary competition, based in his puropse-built F Word restaurant. But there’s also a variety show element, with celebrity guests making surprise appearances in the dining room, and Ramsay embarking on food-related adventures around the country. Expect cameos from the likes of Graham Norton, James May and Joan Collins, plus all the usual Ramsay trademarks: lots of swearing, laughs and great food. With five seasons, this one will keep you busy for a little while.

Hell’s Kitchen

Early episodes of Hell’s Kitchen are some of the most explosive in the whole Ramsay canon. The reality TV show, which first aired in the UK on ITV in 2004, initially followed Ramsay as he tried to teach ten celebrities how to cook.

With eliminations determined by the public, the show made for dramatic viewing – with one notorious moment seeing Coronation Street actress Amanda Barrie trying to strike Ramsay in a moment of frustration. It continued for three more seasons in the UK, but for these Ramsay took a step back, handing over the baton to chefs Gary Rhodes, Jean-Christophe Novelli and Marco Pierre White.

However, Ramsay has remained front and centre in the US version, which has run for a whopping 23 seasons – with a 24th due to premiere this September. In America, the contestants are aspiring chefs rather than professionals, but you can expect the same high-octane drama and fiery critique. The show also went on to spark a restaurant franchise: themed restaurants dotted all over America in places like Las Vegas and Miami.

While we can’t find anywhere to watch the UK version, Hell’s Kitchen USA is available on multiple different streaming sites.

Ramsay’s Best Restaurant

From Michelin stars to AA rosettes and 50 Best lists, there are endless accolades restaurants can strive for. But in this 2010 series, it’s Ramsay’s approval chefs are yearning for. Ramsay’s Best Restaurant sees the celebrity chef sifting through 12,000 nominations to pick 16 eateries to battle it out in a cooking competition. The contestants are subject to various tests, including cooking a full meal for 30 diners in two hours, impressing undercover judges, and serving VIP guests at Ramsay’s eponymous, Michelin-starred restaurant in Chelsea – including the host himself. In the final, the remaining restaurants must cook a high-stakes dinner at Ramsay’s other London venture Petrus, supervised by the likes of Angela Hartnett and Simon Davis.

Ramsay’s Costa del Nightmares

In this 2014 series, Ramsay travels around Europe’s biggest holiday hotspots, visiting Brits trying – and struggling – to run restaurants there. There’s just one season with four episodes, each spotlighting a different location, from Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol to Capbreton in south west France. Ramsay delves into each element of the business, from the menu layout to the customers, hoping to rescue the expats’ dreams.
