Everything we know about Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars series 2

Michelin stars are the world’s most prestigious culinary accolade – but what goes into achieving them? This question is explored in a documentary series for Apple TV+, Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars, which is back for a second season.

Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars Season 2: All The Details

Executive produced by Gordon Ramsay and hosted by Topjaw co-founder Jesse Burgess, Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars delves into the high-stakes world of elite dining, and the quest for stars across the year-long Michelin season. It’s also a rare opportunity to hear from Michelin’s anonymous inspectors, whose work is shrouded in secrecy. The first season saw Burgess following chefs at some of the world’s top restaurants in cities like London, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Copenhagen, and season two will follow a similar format, honing in on 16 restaurants at key moments in their Michelin journeys.

One chef is risking everything to put a tiny island on Michelin’s radar, while another young couple is on a mission to bring Filipino cuisine into the spotlight in America. Another two chefs voluntarily give up their stars after opening a new restaurant, and have 52 days to win it back.

‘As a chef, the pursuit of perfection is everything, and you cannot underestimate the unbelievable drive and ambition, the determination and sacrifice these chefs are going through day in and day out, chasing the dream of acknowledgment from the Michelin Guide,’ said Ramsay, who is no stranger to Michelin stars himself, and recently brought his Hell’s Kitchen restaurant group to the UK.

‘There’s no honour in any industry as prestigious and influential as the Michelin Star,’ added Burgess. ‘We are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the stories of some of the most exciting restaurants in the world – as they throw everything, including the kitchen sink, at their obsessive quest for the ultimate award.’

A former model, Burgess is the co-founder and host of Topjaw, a YouTube channel and social media brand centred around quick-fire chef interviews. Everyone from Michel Roux Jr to Marcus Wareing to Angela Hartnett has been on, sharing their recommendations on the best restaurants, cafes and bars – and the most overrated spots.

The Michelin story goes back to 1889, when brothers Andre and Edouard Michelin launched an eponymous tire company in the French town of Clermont-Ferrand. In a bid to encourage more people to drive, they decided to create a pocket-sized guide containing information for travellers. In 1920, the pair gave it a makeover, adding information on where to eat and stay, going on to recruit a team of mystery diners to anonymously review restaurants. Restaurants can be awarded with either one, two or three stars, and every year there is a ceremony announcing any new awards.

Which Restaurants Will Feature In The Series?

Burgess will visit restaurants from all over the world. In the UK, Burgess will travel to Guernsey to meet chef Nathan Davies, who recently left the Michelin-starred SY23 to open a new coastal restaurant Vraic in Guernsey. We’ll also hear the story of Ynyshir, an immersive 16-seat restaurant in rural Wales where Gareth Ward is on a mission to secure an elusive third Michelin star.
