The Boho Bob: Meet The 70s-Inspired Cut Blazing Through Salons

What do you get when you combine a crop and a shag? A boho bob, of course.
The bob’s reign continues – and this time, it’s getting a vintage twist. Taking its cues from the rockstar shag cuts of the 70s, the boho bob is experiencing a revival in the salon. Think choppy layers, playful textures and a rough around the edges finish. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is A Boho Bob?
‘The boho bob is a softer, more fluid version of the classic bob cut, inspired by the 70s shag cut,’ explains Tina Farey, Editorial Director at RUSH Hair. ‘It perfectly balances feminine effortlessness and structure – creating a striking, yet relaxed silhouette.
‘Unlike blunter, sharper cuts which can often be harder to pull off, the boho bob sits somewhere between the chin and the collarbones with disconnected, wispy layers blended throughout to accentuate the cut’s tousled texture,’ she continues. ‘And you can add subtle face-framing layers for extra movement.’
And, as Tina mentioned, this is a cut rooted in vintage nostalgia – giving it an edge in the salon. ‘The boho bob takes inspiration from the wild and free 1970s, where embracing effortlessness and letting your hair down was a top priority,’ the stylist says. ‘No rigid routine of products, no over-the-top heat styling – just fully embodying the carefree nature of the decade.’
This rough, no-rules-attached take on the bob means it is also ripe for experimentation – as well as a gateway cut to shorter styles. ‘You don’t lose too much shape with the boho bob,’ confirms Tina. ‘The ends of the hair are feathered, but still hold shape, making it less daunting than blunter, more structured cuts.’
Who Suits This Cut?
This rough-hewn cut is an all-round favourite – largely thanks to its versatility. ‘It’s a great option for almost any hair type, from straight to wavy to curly,’ adds Tina. ‘Those with naturally wavier hair will experience a more relaxed, undone effect, while those with straight hair might end up with a more structured, sleek look. (This may mean you’ll have to use a texturising spray to achieve a softer, wispier finish.)’
How To Ask For A Boho Bob In The Salon
In the salon, you’ll want to ask for a shag-inspired bob with plenty of texture. But for a bespoke look, come prepared: ‘I’d always recommend bringing in a few inspiration pictures to show your stylist what you’re after,’ says Tina. ‘This will ensure that you are both on the same page and they’ll be able to give you bespoke customisations to the cut to make sure it works for both your hair type and personal style.
‘Remember that haircuts are individual to you – your stylist can help personalise it and they can also give you suggestions of what they think would suit you best.’
How To Style A Boho Bob
Since this is a cut that thrives on that ‘I just rolled out of bed but still look chic’ feel, styling should take a more undone, relaxed approach. ‘Texture and effortless movement are key,’ confirms Tina. ‘I’d recommend using a medium-sized round brush and volumising mousse to heighten the appearance of the graduated layers and amp up the volume without looking too “overdone” or overly styled.’
What Next?
But what’s next for the boho bob? ‘I think we’ll see more people stepping away from the more structured silhouettes that have been popular,’ suggests Tina. ‘I’d love to see more clients pairing this cut with wispy face framing bangs to give this look that extra throwback feeling.’
