What Happens In Celebrity MasterChef?
The BBC show sees a number of celebrities taking part in six weeks of culinary challenges, which increase in difficulty week on week. It begins with three Heat weeks of three episodes, which test the contestants’ cooking skills, ahead of the semi-final, where the celebrities battle it out for a place in the final. In the final week, the remaining contestants must impress well-known celebrity chefs with their cooking, culminating in the ultimate competition, where three finalists must cook a three-course meal for the judges.
As the BBC outlines: ‘Celebrity MasterChef features three Heat weeks aimed at testing the celebrities’ abilities – with the cream of crop making it past the Quarter Finals at the end of the week, ready for the Semi Final stages, edging closer to Finals Week and in with a serious chance of claiming the gleaming 2025 trophy.’
Challenges differ slightly each year, but there are some regulars, such as the market task, where contestants must create a dish on the spot using a selection of provided produce. Last year, a new pizza challenge was introduced, as well as a task to create an opulent dining experience on the British Pullman Train.
Who Are The Judges?
Series 20 is judged by Grace Dent and John Torode. It was filmed earlier this year, with Dent stepping in to replace Gregg Wallace after he was fired from the show due to allegations of misconduct.

After landing the new gig, Dent said: ‘I’ve been watching MasterChef since I was a girl sitting with my dad on the sofa. My whole family watches it. It’s all about uncovering and championing talent and to have ended up in this position, is more than a dream to me.’ Since then, Dent has been confirmed as one of the permanent new judges for MasterChef, alongside Irish chef Anna Haugh, who runs the restaurant Myrtle in London.
Torode was also consequently fired from MasterChef and Celebrity MasterChef following an allegation he used a racist term. However, the BBC decided to air season 20 anyway, saying in a statement that this was not a ‘straightforward decision’, and that all the celebrities, contestants and guests had confirmed they were happy for the show to run as planned.
